The suggestion of white pedestals on traffic islands was put forward in Parliament recently by Major Nathan, who asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the in London accidents caused by motor cars colliding with strect islands, he would takë steps to ensure that policemen on duty at such points should be sufficiently visible, and that the pedestals at the end of these islands were painted white instead of the present dull grey. Mr. Clynes said that in the opinion of the Commis sioner of Police the visibility, of constables on traffic duty was best secured by improving the lighting where constables were posted, and much had been done in this way by the responsible local authorities or the Commissioner's representa- tires. The painting of pedestals on refuges was a matter for the local authorities, but, he understood that the Minister of Transport was in- arvestigating the possibilty of making
them more conspicuous.

THE EXPERT,
In many ways is the "expert" more kind to his car than the most tender-hearted novice, although this may not at first be apparent to him (the novice).
Take, for instance, that early and well-timed change down to second or third-as the case may be-when the engine revs up almost to its maximum. How many novices realise that it is often far happier then than if it were slogging uphill on top, almost thumping out its willing heart There is also no small feeling of satisfaction to the driver as he executes his neat The vast manufacturing, facilities double-clutch change down. of Willys-Overland make it possible
Again, the same applies to corner. to speed up the production and dising methods. Most drivers come tribution of this wide variety_of commercial and truck units. The line comprises an excellent range, beginning with the Whippet Four commercial chassis in the lowest priced field. Following these units come the Willys Six light delivery commercial chassis, the Willys Six 13 th chassis, and the Willys- Knight Model T-103 13 ton chassis. The latter is powered by a six cylinder Willys-Knight sleeve-valve engine.
There has begs an
exceptional demand for the Willys Six line, which holds an important place be- cause its price range comes between the very lowest-priced chassis and all other trucks.

A considerable improvement in acceleration when executing these manœuvres will be noticed if in
telligent use is made of the igni- tion control, retarding it as the engine loses pred on top, and slowly advancing it again as it accelerates away in the lower gear, As on the road do the methods of the expert differ from those of the novice, so in the motor house, In these days of detachable start- ing handles, not many motorists bother to crank their engines hy hand before using the starting motor, although in cold weather it is a procedure often well worth adopting.

But perhaps more important still, yet few people are aware of it,, is to release the strangler as soon as the engine will run at all. For if the choke is used to help the engine in warming up, the almost neat petrol sucked into the cylinders rapidly washes away what little oil there may be on their walls, and in a few moments as much wear takes place in them and on the pistoas as in many miles of normal running..
With little thought, and a study the methods of good drivers, niceties of the expert soon become apparent to the less experienced, and, when mastered, please the driver as much as they bereft bis car

Plans of the Willys-Overland Company for 1530 call for a steady production of the Whippet models. on a scale to meet the demand of the buying public.
WHIPPET DESIGN.
SOUND ENGINEERING,
The soundness and thoroughness of the work of Willys-Overland -en- gineers is well illustrated in thờ history of the Whippet since its introduction nearly four years age.
Early in the summer of 1920, the Whippet made its debut to the public and at once was acclaimed by hundreds of thousands,
The development of a new style trend was on the verge of sensational, and it was not long until other car manufacturers, noting the wide public acceptance of the Whippet, adopted its style design,
Not alone did the body design and chassis evoke widespread in- terest, which resulted in an excel-" leat sales volume, but the motor particularly departed from the then nccepted engineering practice. The high speed, high compression Whic pet motor, with its exceptionally high horsepower development for the bore and stroke employed. per mitted unusual oil and fuel economy, and at the same time was capable of outstanding sustained speed per- formance under all road condition.
While various changes have been made in the Whippet since it first came before the public, it stands as a tribute to the fundam atals of its design. The same basic prix- ciples employed in the original. Whippet, and which have proved 40 successful in the hands of hun- dreds of thousands of drivers, are still used.
This is explained by
the fact that when the first Whip- pet was presented it was so far in advance of other cars in its price class that no major changes wero deemed necesKATY.
It was the Whippet which first brought into the low-priced field such mechanical features a four- wheel brakes, full force-feed lubri cation, oversize tires, silent timing- chain, low centre of gravity cot struction, and other structural ad- vantages. Practically all these fea- tures were later adopted in pro- ducts of other manufacturers. To (Continued on preceding column),
