The Rev. J. Foster gave a most interesting address "on" "Young China and Religion," the V.D.M.A.At Home," held yester. day in the Cathedral Hall.

The lecturer spoke Grit of the early missionary enterprises of the Nestorians and Jesuits, and" of their success in converting many of the highest placed persons in the land. Then of the hope, which was so pearly realised, of seeing a Christian ruler on the throne of China, in the person of the heir

of the last Ming Emperor, who was given in baptism the name of

↑ Constantine. Had he succeeded to the throne, and been able to estab- lish himself firmly the whole of his people might have become Chris- tians. These early missionaries were working, said the speaker, from the highest down, but that was no longer possible. The old

China had gone; every year was adding more earth to its grave. China as a democracy could not be said in truth to exist, but the spirit of her rulers was that of demo. cracy. Winning China for Chris tianity no longer meant getting a entry into the court but appealing to the common people, of whom another age and another place, it was recorded that, they heard Him gladly.'

Taciam and Buddhism. Taoism represented the lowest atrata in Chinese religion.. Its priests were the alchemists, the geomancers and the fortune tellers. Life for their followers was full of unnamed and unnamable terrors. Tapier still had its adherents, but a significant move was the activity of the Society which had lately been inaugurated in Canton "for the abolition of superstitious prac tices," which was carrying out la forcible campaign by .proclama tions, regulations and taxation of sacrifical objects. The movement was typical of Young China, which. summed up nil religions in the, word "superstition."

Buddhiem had had a wonderful history in China, but the Chinese form fell very far short of the majesty of its founder. The peak- er said that he had received very 'reliable evidence that many of the worst things which were said about the Buddhist monke and anns and their houses were true. That the rulers of China were confiscating temples and lands call over the. country, might not, however, be entirely on this account, but much in the spirit in which our own Henry VIII had broken.un the Never- English religious houses. theless Buddhism was making a determined attempt at a revival and was fighting against material- iam. A modern form was being reached, mainly in Shanghai and Canton and a well organised cam raign was being carried out on modern lines. Buddhism was, how? ever, in the speaker's opinión, too. mexided to get a hold of modern China, it was a retreat from life. whereas Young Chine was bursting with joy at finding both feet in the middle of life.
