CAR, FUR COAT, AND A RING.

SCOTSMAN'S MOTOR-SHOW

ROMANCE

A'story of an elderly Scotsman's romance was told in the King'a Bench Division recently when Mise Mary Belle Gavin, of Upper Glou. center-place, N.W., sued, Telephone Motor Works, Ltd., of Upper Baker. street, N.W. for the return of a motor-car which, she alleged. had been unlawfully detained by them.

For the defence it was contended that the car was not Miss Gavin's the property, but belonged to trustee. of Mr. John Graham, of Maryville, Aberdeen. They further: said that she was not entitled to the return of the car as it bad been deposited with them to secure a lanti;

Sergeant Sullivan, K.C., said that in December, 1928, Miss Gavin had motor-car which she deposited with the defendants, who lent heri £95 at & rate of interest of 400 per cent.-1. per day.

The defendants three or four weeks later handed over the ear to another person.

He then told her he was going to take her to the motor show where he had a surprise for her. As she suggested that she was not equipped for the show in the dress he w wearing. he bought her a handsome fur coat. for which he paid some hundreds of guineas,

They went in the show, where she discovered that the surprise was a beautiful motor-car. [..

He also bought her i engage- ment ring, and later, having re- turned home, he wrote informing Miss Gavin that he had insured the fur coat for £450 and the diamond ring for £100,

On October 20, said Sergenat Sullivan, Mr. Graham wrote:-.

"Dearest Hillie.. I have your most loving letter. I am more than busy as I am a vandidate for municipal honours."

Later, said Sergeant Sullivan, he ..got very jealous, as he had heard she had been out with soinebody else, and he wrote suggesting that she had been deceiving him. He

wrote:

1 am fuished, and you may not wish to see me again. In the Piccadilly Hotel you are termed as a gold-digger."

He added:

The saloon is paid for, but can- not be moved without my written authority."

In another letter he wrote:-

"I believed you, and trusted you, and now I am broken-hearted and consider life not worth living. I never thought for a moment that you were deceiving me. You do not know how much I love you. No man can come between you and me."

On November 7, 1928, he wrote to her:-

My own darling. The car is now ready for removal. Your bank account will be put right to morrow. All my love and many kisses. Your own "John."
