"LITERARY LINKS BETWEEN EAST
AND WEST."
A. SUGGESTION FOR CHINESE SCHOOL OF UNIVERSITY.
INTERESTING ADDRESS TO ENGLISH ASSOCIATION.
The Gaal meeting of the season of the Hong Kong branch of the English Association was held yesterday in the Cathedral Hall. The Rev. Father Macdonald gave, an interesting address on Literary Links between East and West," in the course of which be quoted several translations from different schools of Chinese literature.
A vote of thanks to Sir Henry Gollan, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Association who is going Home on retirement next week, was registered.
His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government (the Hon. Mr. W, T. Southors. C.M.G.) was in the chair.
THE SECOND WALL OF CHINA.
Father Macdonald opened his fec. ture by saying that it was well known. that the literature of no nation stands isolated from that of other races and epochs. Outside influences altered the course of its natural development and the Re- naissance, with its interest in the Classics, had altered the whole course of European literature. Eng land and Germany had had a powerful influence on each other at a later date in both material, and style, but he had found it impos- sible to trace any Western influence upon Chinese literature.

San Francisco, March 26-Mr. U.S. Webb, California's attorney. and Mr. V. S. McClatchy, publisher general, former Senator Phelan, of the Sacramento Bee, announced to-day that they are leaving next week for Washington to urge pas- sion Bill. Mr. Webb said to cor. saga of the Welch Filipino Exclu respondents to-day: "I believe that the time has come when a spirit of selfishness-it one wishes to call it that should develop in this country. We should protect what we have for posterity.
Heretofore, this attitude on the West Coast has beca primarily directed against Japanese, and the difficulty in past years has centred upon Chinese. The present trend against Filipinos follows several recent outbreaks in California; one. of them centring against a group, of Filipinos who employed white girls to dance in their club, and others being directed against Filipina labourers and involving one or two instances of deporta- tions."

The Chairman in proposing a very hearty vote of thanks Father Macdonald said that he felt that the address had inspired them all to take up the study of at least translations of Chinese literature. This was the last meeting of the session and he felt that they had had a very ready response to the effort that was made to establish in Hong Kong a branch of the English Association for the study of English and Chinese literature, Literature. said Father Mac-The opening meeting of the next and their relation to each other donald, was composed of writings session would be on the first Mon- which had a universal human in day in October, and the subjects terest, and beauty of form and of would be announced in due course.. thought.
