Prisoners.

One of the chief trials on Lipari was the presence of Fascist spics, who pretended to be political pri- soners, while some prisoners of weak character tried to earn a par don by reporting imaginary plots. Thus one man, Cocco, denounced to the authorities an adult school run by the deportees as a means of employing their time by learning" Inguages, mathematics, or history Cocco told the authorities that it was a cloak for political discussions and preparations for an armed re- volt. More military police were rushed to the island, many arrests were made, and 50 men were trans ferred to Italy for trial before the Extraordinary Tribunals set up by the Fascist State. On the other hand the Fascist Government wel tomed any submissions because of their propaganda value, Fre quently I was approached by more or less secret agents of Fascism on the island. Miss Sherriff, giving evidence, said that she regarded Eustis as a man of, little immediate mesias, but great expectations.
