New York, March 23-Following sa carly showing of resistance, * wave of selling developed on the New York Stock Exchange today and thought sharp declines towards the close, anys the daily review of the Dow Jones Financial News Agency.

Disappointment over U.S. Steel brought heavy offerings, and Steel closed off 1 to 100. Bethlehem closed up. however, to 107 Ludlum Steel was up to 40% American Rolling Mill was off to DI.

There were many small sales and the tickers were once 45 minutes behind the market. Thereafter the sales volume increased, the size of the sales did likewise, and the tape eased. Total sales for the day eama to 4,598,050 shares.

Western Union points United Aircraft "lost after early strength het closed at 84, one point above the close yesterday.

U.S. Steel, Chrysler, Studebaker, Hudson, Gillette and a few others lost fractionally up to two points. Chrysler closed off, a point to 30. Hudson was likewise off one point, to 58. General Motors was off 47. Packard closed at 221, 'off 1.

The Dow Jones average for 30 industrinis was up 1.30. Vanadium advanced four points to close at 13. Westinghouse was off a point, to 1623. Du Pont gained closing at 137. American Car gained to close at 1471 Allied Chemical was up 4 to 953 at the close. Eastman was of 1 to 2394.

For 20 rails, the Dow Jones aver. age showed a recession of 14. to 153.47. Pennsylvania was off a quarter-point to 834. New York

Central was off one-half to 187, Rock Island rose to 1991. Cang dian Pacific gained 1 to 3091 Union Pacific gained 11 to close at 237 and Northern Pacific was off 1 to 933.

Losses on Utilities.

The Dow Jones average for 90 utilities was off 1.24 to 89.81. American Tel. & Tel. lost half a point, closing at 401. Internation- al Tel. & Tel. was off a point to 62, Radio Corporation was off to 49: Electric Bond & Share dropped 1 to 100, Columbia Gas & Electric was up 1 to 954. Standard Gas & Electric was off 3 to 111 and Con- solidated Gas of New York was off a point to 320: Pacife Lighting war off 91 to 002.
