THE STORY OF THE WALTZ.

BROADCAST TALK

Last evening a talk was given from the Hong Kong wireless Btation Norah

WITHIN CALL..

The following ships were expected to be in wireless communication with Hong Kong yesterday —

Seang Bee, Katsuragisan Maru,

Japanese

on the waltz, by Miss Mikago Maru No. 5, Tetsurah Chilo and Mr. Alfred Maru, Tenyo Maru, Barnett, two well-known London

professional dancers.

Mr. Barnett said the early his tory of the waltz is wrapped in mystery. The French have claimed it as a development of the "volta," a national dance of the 11th cen- tury. What is termed the "old"

waltz is of Bavarian origin, but it did not become popular until the Viennese composers took the music in hand, and produced some of the most beautiful melodies ever. written. The waltz was actually played into popularity in Vienna in the late 18th century.

Its arrival in England was dur- ing the Napoleonic Wars. Dance innovations have frequently been associated with turbulent events; the foxtrot came into popularity during the Great War.

In its early days the waltz was considered unseemly, indecorous, and caused storms of protest, even from most unlikely quarters. Byron satarised it" in no unmeasured terms in a poem entitled:-"The

was somewhat remarkable for one," who. in modern times, would have been considered broadminded..
