offence,
:
Revenue Oficer Grimmitt told His Worship that the woman in dock admitted ownership of the drug on the night of the raid and was subsequently arrested. The magistrate ordered the summons to be made out in the names of both Women. The bearing then pro- ceeded.
R. O. Grimmitt said when a raid was carried out it the premises on Friday he found five taels of opium in the rear cubicle, of which the,, original defendant was the oc eupier. Two one-teal tins of opium were thrown out of the window when he entered the room. On first defendant accepting ownership of the drug she was arrested. The story of very foolish Chinese joss woman, who was per- suaded to with a considerable sum of honey and jewellery to Дви pease the spirit of her deceased alster, was related before Alr. Whyte-Smith at Kowloon Magis- tracy on Saturday.
The complainant in evidence said that she met the defendant (another married woman) whilst on a visit to her neighbours. The latter said she was a fortune teller and told her that the spirit of her deceased sister was in hell," and would molest her if she did not allow the
defendant to joss to the spirit. The complainant consented and parted with 4 and some clothing. The de fendant 'came the next day and said that she had got in touch with the dead sister, who had asked for silk clothing, a gold ornament, and new Bank notes. The complainant handed over a suit of clothing, car rings and 824 in notes. The two women then went to a Temple ta worship.

The Enforcement Division; now holds seized narcotics valued at more than $2,000,000, which are awaiting destruction, the. commis- rioner declared.
Meanwhile syndicates with re- sources in excess of a billion dollars, gold retain a vast army of peddlers warring against the prohibition enforcement department which maintains only a small group of detectives backed by an appro- priation of $1,500,000 to finance their fight, said Mr. Anslinger,
It was intimated that although the enforcement group can keep track of the trend, of the narcotics trade and make many individual seizures, the opposing forces are so numerous and so well financed that at the present time the fight is virtually a hopeless one so. fat as any comprehensive narcotics house- cleaning in the United States in concerned,
