Should war, break out the chances seem to favour Nanking, Had Faxo supported the Kwangai eliqua and CHANG. FAT FOs during the past year the overthrow of CRIANG 1 SHEK might have been nocom plished. PEACE OR WAR IN THE NORTH?

Ar the present moment the pros- pects of peace in China are not bright. A few days ago it seemed that YEN HI SHAN's big coalition bad dissolved, and YEN himself would either leave the country or be content to resume to the role of provincial tupan, which he has played with marked, success for some eighteen years. credited with expressions of regret and repentance, but these melted simultaneously with the snows and the coming of the campaigning season. In fact, as the Persian poet puts it:-

TEN WAS

pieces lore."

The popular idea seems to have been that the last coalition was

dissolved by the sudden defection of Generala Has Ee Chu and Samn YU SAN fron the northern enso on receipt of a million dollars each and promises of a provincial over- tordahip apiece, from CHIANG RAI SHEK. Both of these Generals have been playing a deep and subtle game for several months, varying their promisca to the opposing sides with declarations of "inde pendence." They do not appear to be animated by any motives except personal aggrandizemcat, and, if HE SECOND YEARLY DRAW either CHANG or" YEN even finds himself strongly enough placed, (1998 Isane-$500.
