The case in which a Chinese wo- man was charged with possession of 410 tacks of illicit opium; found by Revenue Officer concealed in "the bollow panel of a window. of No.. Pokfulum Road, was concluded at Central Magistracy yesterday.

A well-organised, highly re- munerative traffic has grown up for bringing these women to Eng land. They come in as British aubjects by means of the return halves of week-end tickets, issued from London to the porta of northern France.

Once in England they never re- port to the police as aliens are supposed to do.

RECONSIDERATION OF SUGAR TAXES DEFEATED IN THE SENATE.

[UNITED PRESS.]

Washington, March 13.-Br vote of 47 to 53, the Senate, to-day, rejected the Nye motion to recon- sider the Cuban and world sugar tariffs.

This action proved discouraging to the Democratic Western Repub fican Coalition which has been endeavouring to prevent passage by the House of high rates on. sugar and other commodities, and caused many to forecast similar tariffa an lamber and hides, and presently on petroleum as well,

The Senate had entered unani- mous consent to the holding of today's vote on sugar tariffs, although there was a movement for greater delay in order to allow an attempt to prove undue pressure as a lobbyist by Heber Grant,. President of the Mormon Church and interested largely in damestic bect sugar.
