TO THE N. Y, K. CONCERNING MAIDEN VOYAGES

" ~ I was interested in the date fro the Halden Traveller' who intends to be on the maiden voyages of two of your new meter- ships on a single voyage to America, cext apring, by changing ships at Honolulu,

"She says the Tatsuta Haru' #131 follo the Chichibu Maru in three weeks, yet I always supposed Pacific liners ran on a two- week schedule. Hext year are you running

to America via Honolulu only every thres WBOKS?"

Jotheys

It is true that the maiden voyages next spring are three weeks apart

but there is a regular liner in the interval

In fact we have many weekly wailings to America via Honolul next year, and never more than a formighly interval. The "Chichibu Manu"-voyage number one-will leave Yokohama, on April ic followed in one week by the "Tenyo Maru", and two weeks Lazer by the "Tareum Maru" on her maiden voyage,

Frequent sailings are possible, because those three new giant companion motarships, the "Chichibu Maru", the "TABER MATUS" and the "Aurse Maru", will be in service with the popular "Tasya Mari", "Tenyo Maru" and the Shinyo Maru"-six specialis for an exacting trade Shipt and men, exclusively Orient-California"

Unlike the primary cell, it has the advantage of being capable of recharging when its initial sup ply of electricity is exhausted or discharged. It is, however, an article that can cause trouble. or exasperating failure if not properly attended to, while the damage that сад be done to carpets, etc. through leaking acid is, as many have no doubt experienced, very real.

Application of Knowledge. Unfortunately, in the case of the majority of people, the accumala tor has to be periodically left to the tender mercies of one who, per haps, does not give it the care we should like it to receive. I reler, of course, to the necessity of send- ing it to some outside source to be recharged. The accumulator, to give of its best, reqiures careful attention not confined to charging A knowledge of its weaknesses and requirements is necessary to its efficiency and, when such know- ledge is displayed, has been known to have effect with a charging agent!

In the old days of celluloid con- this defect that teiners it would cause cracked cells, with eon- sequent damage by leaking acid.

Although most makes of accumu- lator are now constructed with thick glass or ebonite containers the danger of buckling still exists, the plates being liable to bend or circuit,

The causes are many and" include too strong an electrolyte or acid, discharging at too slow a rate, leaving for a long time partial- ly discharged, or charging at too low a rate. Provided the defect is not too deep-rooted a remedy, in most cases is provided by a long "and slow charge.

Disintegration of the plates-that is, some of the material of the plate becoming loosened and collecting in the form of a sediment at the bot tom of the container-is a natural process throughout the life of the cell, but may be seriously acceler- ated if the cell is subjected to bad The sediment should sever be allowed to accumulate, but should be cleaned periodically.

What to Watch For. Observation of the following points will go a long way towards keeping an accumulator in good condition and giving service of two or three years..

When cell is fully charged 'bubbles of gas are freely liberated from both sets of plates, the acid ussumes a milky colour, a volt- meter reading across, each cell will show 2.8 volta, and the specific gravity of the acid is approximate- Jy 1.9.

A voltmeter and a hydrometer, each of little expense, for deter mining the last two points are really essential to the home charger, being, of course, also useful for indienting the extent of discharge. The hydrometer is most useful for this and, in the majority of accuma- lators, a reading of 1.18 will be obtained from a cell when semi- discharged and 1.17 when complete ly discharged.

Success in picking up these stations also depends very largely upon fay ourable atmospheric conditions. Readers are invited to add to this list should they succeed in plaking up any station not in- cluded in either of these Ilsta.

"SIR,-I shall be glad if "Coberor"! will give me advice in the follow. ing matter. At present I am using a 3 valve set (Dict. low frequency, transformer coupled). Resulta with an ordinary power valve in the last stage are good, but I wish to get zavre volume. I find, however, on putting a Pentode in the last stage a peculiar whistling takes place. This whistling also occurs it I use në output transformer.
