Warning was issued, however, that early returns should not bo construed as indicating anything definite."

Of

A total of 20,000,000 ballets have been distributed. On the first count 201,885 ballots were checked. these, 80,730 were votes in favour of the continuation of Prohibition, 91,915 favoured modification, and 118.934 favoured repeal.

These returns covered portions of the States of New York, New Jersey, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana. Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska.

and

New York and New Jersey proved "wet, Kansas was dry the others showed, less pronounced attitudes..

National politicians are watching the poll with intense interest as an indicator of sentiment throughout the United States. Presidential polls by the Literary Digest have given indica- extraordinarily accurate tions of how the genuine vote was subsequently to be recorded.

Expert contributors point to the Committee in charge of prohibition hearings to-day listened to the fact that some 100,000 acres of high- reading of telegrams from all parts ly suitable land will become avail- of the United States. in which in-able, though in their opinion, the dustrial lenders advocated a reten- only handicap may be the supply tion of the present "dry law."

Testimony of the "drys," which follows the innings enjoyed by "wet" proponents, is expected to last several days more,

On the committee calendar are seven resolutions as follows:-La" Guardia's Bill to restore Sintes' rights to the control of liquor; the Cochrane resolution to repeal the Prohibition mendment;, another Cochrane resolution to exempt three per cent. beer and light wines from application of the Volstead Enforce- ment Act; Mrs. Norton's project

national referendum on pro-. for hibition, and the Bills of Congress- man Sabath, Clancy and Igne, all of which provide absolute repenl.

It seems almost certain, however, that Congress will take no stap at the present time beyond the transfer of enforcement activities to the Department of Justice.

The Drys believe they have an overwhelming majority in both House and preponderant support of national public opinion. They await a crushing reveraal for the Weta.

"IMPROVEMENT FOLLOWS ANGLO-DUTCH AGREE-

MENT.

Mesara, Pentreath & Co. have forwarded us the following_letter," dated February 12 from Messrs. Henry Hemelryk & Co., Liverpool.

Since our last review, there has been rather more movement in the market than for some time part, and, on balance, values show an advance of id for Spot and id for forward deliveries after having been considerably higher.

The improvement has been due to outside influence rather that to trade demand. The chief cause has been the meeting between the Eng- lish and Dutch growers last Fri- day, following which it was an nounced that cortain recomenda- tions were adopted for submission to the main bodies for dealing with the output side of the question. In addition, the January shipment figure of 61,097. tons proved to be about as expected, and the stocka in the hands of Eastern dealers, which were known yesterday, show only a moderate increase of about

600 tons.

So far consumers have shown no

particular anxiety to buy, which is quite characteristic, but they will probably be the keenest buyers when the price has advanced id or more per 1b.

It looks as if sentiment is once more veering round and becoming more favourablo to the article. We think that a period of more ac- tivity and better prices are ahead, especially if the report current yesterday that February shipments are likely to show a decrease of approximately 10,000. tona is con- firmed when the official figure is received early next month. At the same time, the prevailing gloom in financial circles is a deterrent to much of an advance," and "longs" may have to exercise patience.

Stocks:-London 61,462 Liverpool 19,781 tons: net increase of 865 tons."
