The Chinese man and woman who tempting to sell two boys, were were remanded on a charge of au again before Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith at Kowloon Magistracy yesterday.

Mr. L. R. Andrewes, Assistant

At about 9.p.in, three men engag-, ed the sampan which was thened their verdict of death from lying near the pier, and it was alleged that they were the three accused. The master of a fishing junk which was anong a, number of vessels lying in the fairway would be calied as a witness, and he would say that he heard; a wo man's voice calling for help. The witness, Kweng Fat Ying, would also say that he saw the woman struggling with two men, while a third was sitting in the fore part of the boat. The woman was then pushed or fell overboard, and the three men also went into the water, The evidence of the junk master, the Crown Solicitor coatinued, would show that he picked up the woman first. It was not clear whe ther she was then dead, but at any rate she never recovered. The next step the witness took, assisted by two of his fokis, was to pick up the second accused and tie him up.

Mr. Holmes went on to refer to relevant portions of statements made by the prisoners in answer to the original charge of murder and "rubbery, which showed that all the men were at one time on the bant, The first accused in one of his statements admitted that he took the bangles, and, in another be stat- ed that he threw them into the sea, At any rate the articles were not recovered.

Medical Oficer's Conclusions. The first witness called was Dr. J. E. Davey, who said that he held a post mortem examination on the body of the deceased at the Kow look Mortuary. It was that of a young woman about 20 years old.

There were two small marks on the left side of the neck which could have been caused by the chumb and knuckles being "pressed against the throat. In his opinion the pressure might have been con- tinued for about fifteen seconds and unconsciousness may have re- sulted. The woman was probably alive when she entered the water. There were no other marks of viol- ence, and he was definitely, of the opinion that the assault was the direct cause of the woman's death.

Other witnesses called included a

ARSON CHARGE.

YOUTH REMANDED FOR À WEEK.

Alleged to have maliciously set fro to 30, Stanley Street 58, D'Aguilar Street, 179, Reclamation Street, 296, Shanghai Street and 2. Portland Street on Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning, Li Yau Chuenga young student residing at 19, Waterloo Road made his appearance before Mr. Whyte-Smith yesterday.

The defendant was arrested fol- lowing the fire in Shanghai Street early or Sunday morning.

Appearing for the Inspector General of Police, Detective-Inspec- tor Fallon made a formal applica- tion for a week's remand for fur- ther inquiries, which was granted.

His Lordship dealt with the state- the jury to consider carefully the meats made by the men and asked evidence against the second and

was on the boat but denied that alongside the informant's junk. There was another boat on which he took any part. the second accused was tied up, and the girl was lying at the back. Witness said that he tried artificial respiration on the woman for about an hour without success.

Statements were made by the prisoners from the dock. The first accused said that they engaged the boat for a picnic and he was given the bangles by the girl, who was acquainted with him. He frighten- ed the girl and she shouted out. He then jumped into the water and swam to his own junk. The second stated that he was seated in the how of the boat and took no part in the robbery. A similar state ment was made by the third accus- ed.

Summing-up and Verdict.

In summing-up his Lordship pointed out to the jury that the case against each of the men should he treated separately. The first ac- cused was charged with robbery, and if the jury were satisfied with the efidence on that charge, there was no need to consider the other charge of assault with intent to rob, which was the count against the other two' prisoners,

(Continued on next Column.)

Addressing the first accused, his Lordship said that the jury had found that he attacked the girl and took her bangles. It was fort- unate for the prisoner that he was not standing in the dock on a charge of murder. "You stand convicted on your own statements," continued his Lordship, "and I agree with the verdict." Sentence of five years' imprisonment with hard labour and 18 strokes of the "cat" was passed.)

The Sessions will be continued at 10.30a.m. to-day, when the Puisne Judge will deal with the cane against four men who have pleaded not guilty a charge of robbery by two or more, on board a passenger boat on February 17. The trial of two men in connection with their alleged dealings with pirates for the ransom of a pas senger kidnapped from the ss. Deli Maru will take place before the Chief Justice (Bir Henry Gollan) at the same time..
