CANTON TRADE" METAL MARKETS.
NOTES.
There has been a brisk demand for four lately and supplies are limited.

•
The cotton yarn market remains dull but prices are firm as stocks are limited: According to a Shanghai telegram, the market there is
normal.
+
The value of the Central Bank of China notes of 83, 815, 830 and $100 denominations has risen during the past few days. They are at present quoted at 85 per seat. of their face value.
*
According to the statistics compil. ed by the Rice Merchants' Guild, some 233,720 piculs of foreign rice were imported by Swatow from Annam and Siam through Hung Kong during 1029.
Supplies of red melon-seeds. of which, Chinese people are exceed- ingly fond, have been limited. The price has risen, those of superior quality being sold at 865.50 per Picul. The secde come from the North River district.."
+
Very large quantities of wolfram ore have been imported from" the North River district recently, but demand by foreign merchants is limited. The price has fallen several dollars, being now H.K.861 per picul. A further decline in price "is expected.
•
Owing to the war, tradle conditions in the West River districts are un- usually disappointing. Several of the vessels plying between Canton and Wuchow have suspended sailing as there are no cargoes. Until the political crisis in Kwangsi is over, nå revival is expected.
The embargo on the export of rice was recently lifted in Wuchaw and very large quantities grown in the West River district have been sent to Canton. Another consignment of over 300,000 piculs is expected in Canton in day or two. It is ex- pected that the price of rice will drop still further in the pear future.
--
Manufacturers of, umbrellas re port very brisk trade this year on account of the rise in the prices of foreiga umbrellas caused by the exchange. Demand both locally and in the country districts has been doubled. Over 100,000 locally-made umbrellas were exported to Hong Kong and Malaya recently to meet the demand of Chinese residents.
