'DESPERATELY ANXIOUS' TO MARRY,

NAVAL OFFICER AND AN UN- KNOWN WOMAN.

A plea for derey for a husband who was desperately, anxious to marry another woman and a wife's reluctaned to ask for a divorce were features of a remarkable casa in the Divorce Court, London, Inst month.

The case drew from Mr. Justice Hill a comment that he regarded the state of the law as singularly unfortunate, but he had to take the faw as it atcod.

"Mrs. Bertha Lucy Guan, of Felp- ham. Bognor Regis, petitioned for a deeree of judicial separation on the ground of the misconduct of her husband, Lt..Comdr. Philip Leonard Gunn, of the Royal Navy, said to be stationed at Portsmouth:

Mr. Geoffrey Tyndale, counsel for the husband, said there was no dis- pute that he committed misconduct. He was desperately anxious to marry the woman, and if, in mercy. the wife would ask for a decree of dissolution it would be in her in- terest and likewise in the public in-

terest.

The Wife's Reasons

Mr. Beddington, for the wife, snid he had discussed the matter with her and there were certain reasons which accounted for her attitude. Up to quite recently the husband was allowing his wife 299 a month.' Since he confessed his misconduct and his affection for another woman he had reduced the allowance to £11 a month, and last month to £3. If the wife got a judicial separa- tion, it was a final decree, and she could proceed at once to obtain alimony.

If she got a divorce she had to wait six months before she could get in order. The only information the husband had given about the woman he had confessed his affec- 5 to 5.30 p.m.-European

The wife might reconsider the matter when she knew who the other woman was. In the mean- time she was entitled to a final decree of judicial separation.

A woman who had been paying à call on a friend was asked to stay and play a rubber of bridge. She acquitted herself rather poorly.

When her hostess wag showing the visitor out she remarked politely; "It was nice of you to stay and play. You must come along again another evening-when we're stuck for a fourth."

It was the frst day of February, and the teacher of a first-grade room asked her pupils: "Children, can anyone tell whose anniversary comes in this month

After much delay one little girl raised her hand. The teacher said, "Mary, you may tell us,"

Mary very proudly stood up and said, "The groundhog's”.

The self-made 'man was in the midst of his first interview. "How," inquired the reporter, did you Gnd time to read in those forma- tive years?"

The self-made man patted his chest proudly. "I kept a good book open on "my desk," said he, and read it during telephone calls-while holding the wire after someone had said, 'Just a moment, please."?
