In a dilapidated old hut in Gar- deners Road, Mascot, Sergeant Madden and Constable Healy, of Redfern, found two girls in the compaty of a Chinese.
At the Redfern Police Station the girls were charged with vagrancy. Ooniul-General's Statement,
In a letter, the Consul General for China (Mr. F. T., Sung) refers to the allegation that at least one white girl" had been sent Quinhon.abrond by white-slaters, and points out that the Customs..authorities Manila.
are clothed with, and exercise, great power in regard to the issue of passports. It is not possible." he stated, that a passport could be obtained for any girl-unless the Customs authorities were convinced of the moral and financial standing of the applicant." and certainly it could not be issued to her. without her full knowledge and consent."
Mr. Sung mentioned that the Maca Nanking Government, viewed with Shanghai.alarm the whole question of white alavery, and its kindred evils, and was making a determined attempt to eradicate the traffic. Stringent legislation had caused it to drift to the treaty ports, but an agreement had now been reached with the various Settlements to deal with the question.

MAGAZINE - EDITOR. WITH DESK IN SENATOR'S OFFICE.
(UNITED PRZHB.]
WASHINGTON, Mar. 7. Mr. Warren Doane, editor of a high tariff magazine called The Manufacturer, told the lobby coin- mittee to-day that be maintains a desk in the Senate Building office of Senator Joseph R. Grundy of Pennsylvania.
This testimony followed a do mand by several senators for investigation of a report that a "tariff lobbyist " was occupying quartors there, Senator Grundy had previously characterized Mr. Doase as a "visitor."
The situation has special spice because of the fact that Senator Grundy wus himself formerly a lobbyist employed by the Pennsyl vania Manufacturers' Association hefore he was appointed to the Banate seat he now holds.
