SPORTS NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[BY BROADCASTER"]

A very interesting stage has been reached in the Football Shield- ganes. South China, last" year's winners, played a pointless draw with the Navy in spite of extra time. Both goalkeepers had much to do, and the Navy forwards miss- ed several good opportunities to put their side ahead. It was generally anticipated that the Chinese team would win last Satur day, as the Navy were without the services of a few of their re gular players, and were consequent. ly not so strong as usual. In the replay, if the Navy could muster a full team, a very close game should be seen, with the sailors nossibly getting the honours. I think they will start favourites.

In view of their past successes Kowloon Football Club must have been rather disappointed at their display against the "Somersets. The Kowloon team's enthusiasm alone was not sufficient to win the day. The soldiers deserve their victory of three clear goals, and the result was never in doubt, as Kow- loon went down after a few minutes' play. In the junior Shield games, a very even struggle was seen between the Chinese "B" and the Somersets. At one stage it looked as if the Athletics would swamp their op ponents, and at half-time they were two goals up, but in the second half Bome very good football was seen, and the Chinese had to be on the defensive practically all the time. The soldiere obtained one goal and tried very hard to equalise, but the Chinese held out

The defeat of Kowloon was a surprise, but it must be said in fairness to the Eastern Football Club that their team has made rapid. improvement. At one time they were three goals ahead of Kew, loon, but the latter team were not in be denied and managed to secure two goals before, the final whistle came. The Eastern team possess a very well-balanced side, and the tussle between them and the Chin- ese "B" should prove a thrilling With good combination. their forwards may prove a thorn l'in the defence of the Chinese side. The backs are sound, and if they should score the first goal in the final match, there is every reason to think that they will keep this advantage.

Saturday's racing was very en- joyable from many points of view, and even the accident in the sixth race, followed by the subsequent disqualification, did not mar the fun of the day.
