NEW POLICE ORDER DIFFICULTIES.

MAGISTRATES WITHOUT DOCTORS. REPORTS.

"The less I say the better about the new regulation, but I see any number of difficulties that I am going to encounter," remarked Mr. H. CA. Bingley, the magistrate, at the Marylebone Police Court last month.

Mr. Bingley was referring to the now order of the Commissioner of Police, under which, since January 20. iloctors' reports about prisoners are not attached to the charge sheets, and are therefore withheld from the magistrates.

The new method is for the doctors to report their findings to the ac cused persons in the presence of the police who had arrested them. This was done in two cases heard by Mr. Bingle in both of which the ac- cused person denied being drunk.

A constable said in the first case that he thought the doctor said that the nan had more drink than was good for him.

Help Out On.

Mr. Bingley: That does not neces sarily mean, he was drunk. This is one of the disadvantages of the new order.. Up to the present. I have been able to see the doctor's report- when a man has pleaded not guilty, Now that belp is cut off-unless I call the doctor and incur extra ex; pense.

Tire. 11311 eventually pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay 10s. 6d.. the doctor's fee.

the

M. Bingley remarked in second case: The policeman says you..were drunk: you say you were not. How can I decide? I have no doctor's repart now under the new arrangement."

The man eventually pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay the doctor's for, 10s... 6d.

A man suffering from an injury to his head appeared before Mr. Bernard Campion, K.C.. magistrate at the Thames Court, on Saturday on a charge of drunkenness. "

BABY ROCKED AT THE ALTAR.

13TH CENTURY CUSTOM REVIVED.

A white-robed infant, the first- born child of Walter Masfield, a miner, was the central figure of an old-world ceremony at the village. church of Blidworth, Nottingham- shire, recently, when he was de dicated and rocked in a wooden cradle at the altar.

The custom of rocking a baby in the church on Candlemas Sunday goes back to the thirteenth century, and has been revived by the viear, tho Rev. John Lowndes. It is unique in the British Isles, and symbolises the Bible story of the presentation of the child Christ in the Temple.

Dedication, 21 ...The parents brought their baby to the church, and during the service kept their stand by the altar steps. The vicar received the child from the mother's arms, presented it be fore the altar, named it Walter Henry, and dedicated its life to the service of God, adding: "May thou never be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ; may thou man- fully fight against sin, the world, and the devil, and continue Christ's faithful servaat until life ends.”

Then the vicar placed the child in the craddle, which he rocked severni times, afterwards lifting out the little one and handing it back to the mother.

"On arrival at Clacton we went to the Palace Café, and while there Collins and Short had about four glasses of beer each.

"Miss Robbins and I had two glasses of port each, but we did ot drink the first two, but poured

them into flower-pot.
