"The system of Travellers' Cheques was originated in 1981 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel carreggy which would give the bolder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of loca! currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade name of AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS', CHEQUES! the ward Travellers' being spelled with one #1. The advantage of the Cheques was so apparent that other banking institutions adopted the system.”
