Chicago, Feb. 25.-Bodlam gripp ed the nation's largest grain mar- ket here to-day as the price of wheat crashed to less than a dollar gold a bushel.

It was estimated that between 130,000,000 and 300,000,000 bushels changed hands during the course of the day's trading.

Judge Smith gave as his grounds the provisions of a California State law prohibiting marriage of whites with Mongolians.

JUDGE ON NECESSITY OF OBEYING THE R'LES.

An action for divorce was brought before Judge G. W. King in H. M. Supreme Court Shanghai last week, says the NC, Daily News, by Mr. H. C. Brown against his wife, Mrs. C. J. Brown, on the ground of adultery with an un- known co-respondent.

Mr. E T. Maitland appeared for petitioner and respondent was not represented by counsel," "The Judge pointed out that, un- der rules 8 and 9 of the local pro cedure, which are based on the home rules, certain formalities had to be excouted and these had not beea complied with. A divorce could not be rushed. The rules had to be complied with, and the case could not continue until they had been.

Mr. Maitland then applied for

fortnight's adjournment. and Judge King observed that counsel would have to give the Court satis factory proof that all reasonable efforts had been made to identify the co-respondent.

Counsel replied that he could get proof that all efforts had been made but the co-respondent's name was unknown: they knew his national: ity, however.

The Judge then said that the ruics had not been complied with, and he ordered an adjournment for a fortnight.

From Penang Dr. Voronoff starts by motor-car for Singapore this morning on his way to Indo-China and the neighbouring countries. He hopes to stay in Singapore near- ly six weeks lecturing. His tour ia being undertaken at the request of the French Government.

Mr. D'Almada remarked that as a matter of fact, his client did not awe the money to the complainants at all. He did not engage them to do the work in question, but had been authorized by a contracting firm to collect certain monies on their behalf in payment of a debt.. The latter firm owed the defendants money and they were under the im- pression that this money was due to them.

The Magistrate in dismissing the summons intimated that it was anore of a matter for a civil action than police proceedings.

CHILD'S TRAGIC DEATH.

An inquest was held in Shanghai, last week, on the body of Michael Richards, two-and-a-half years old, who died at the Country Hospital, of ammonia. poisoning. The only evidence given, says the .C. Daily Jews, was that of the father, Mr. Arthur P. Richards,..of the Asiatic Petroleum Co. Mr. Richards said that he was sitting in the drawing- room of his house in Avenue Joffre, when he heard the child cry out, and at the same time Mrs. Richards called to him to fetch a doctor, as the child had swallowed some am- monia. Mr. Richards tried to get Dr. Parsons on the telephone, but, not succeeding, ran to the doctor's house, which was close by. Dr. Parsons was out, but was found at another house by telephone, and gave instructions that the child should be given antidotes of vine. gar and olive oil, and removed to the Country Hospital, Mr. Rich- ards then returned home and saw that the antidotes were given, after which the child was rushed to the Country Hospital, where he was further treated by Dr. Ransom and Dr. Bryson, unhappily without
