BIG SUCCESS AT THE THEATRE ROYAL.

SIR CECIL CLEMENTI "SEEING " MALAYA.

VISITS TO THE F.M.S. AND JOHORE:

די

Singapore, February 20. Sir Cecil Clementi will pay his first official visit to the Federated Malay MUSIC OF ENGLAND'S YOUTH. Commissioner, during the current States, in his capacity as High

month.

At the Theatre Royal last night the English Singers once more car- ried us back to the spacious days of Good Queen Bees; to the days when the gallant gentlemen of the "period, their ladies and their faith- iul retainers gathered round the table after suppar to sing the tradi- tional music, sacred and secular, and also the new madrigala which Orlando Byrd and Weelkes and Gibbons were producing with a facility and a profusion, like that of the posts in the realm of drama.

The spirit of those days has been entirely lost, but their echo comes with extraordinary sweetness. This music has in it things inherent in our raec, and when we hear it, even for the first time it has the inscina tion of familiarity. This is the.. England which we are in danger of losing, and the English Singers show us what it is, and how graci ous a life was that of our ancestors. The singers of these songs were, moreover, no long haired, lily hand- ed aesthetes, but the followers of Drake and the ornaments of Queen Elizabeth's court.

The English Singers A big chain and novel, but magnificently upheld. And in Hong Kong, we exiles re- spanded, as we do not respond to the claims of cosmopolitan classical music. To hear the songs of our own country's youth, people have come readily to theee performances, and it was good indeed to see the theatre filled, and enthusiastic.

The Programmė.

The detailed arrangements are not yet complete, but it is stated at Government House that His Ex- leave Singapore on March 11 and cellency and Lady Clementi will will be away 12 days.

They will visit Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Kangsar and Seremban, and great preparations are being made at all these towns to give them an impressive welcome.

Sir Cecil and Lady Clementi will on Tuesday, February 25, pay an officin! visit to Johore.

The ceremony of welcome will take place in the Throne Room of the Istana Besar at 1.30 p.m.. A guard of honour of 100 men from the Johore Military Forces will be mounted at the main entrance, and His Excellency will be received with the Royal Salute and the Bri. tish National Anthem.

LEAGUE'S INFLUENCE IN

THE EAST.

WORK OF THE SINGAPORE BUREAU.

Weltevreden, February 19.-The Advisory Council of the Eastern Bureau of the League of Nations for epidemiological intelligence bas opened at the Pasteur Instituto at Bandoeng.

Counsel urged that the Court should consider the matter and al- low his client to complete the pre- sent competition in order that he could keep faith with his large number of clients.

Mr. Evana may or may not plead guilty," Mr. Stevens added. He asked for the case to be post- poned until Tuesday next,

When His Worship directed Mr. Stevens to see the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mr. Tongue said that the Deputy Public Prosecutor was fully aware of the facts, and the police had a complete answer to the statements made by counsel.

The rols, street cries eongs gained the most applause and were in every way delightful. Beautiful as is some of the more complicated music, such as that of Orlando Gibbon's, The Silver Swan and the Corpus Christi " carol, it was the simpler forms that appealed most to the hearers. The complicated tempo which, in con- junction with the minor key, is so fascinating to sing is not so pleas- ing to listen to as the more, direct and cheerful arrangements. We've been a while a wandering and the "Wassail Song " both arranged by R. Vaughan Williams and The Holly and the Ivy" delightfully set by Rutland Broughton, charmed every one, and an encore of each was demanded.

Their role, as co-ordinating Bureau for International research problemas specially affecting Eastern areas, must be studied with special. reference to what they had set out to accomplish and, what had been .accomplished.

The next point was the League's influence in the East. It would be admitted that the Eastern Bureau was filling a place in the scherne of the League's Asintic activities and upholding League of Nation's prostige.

One saw in the East signs of a larger measure of attention and interest in these problems than for- morly.
