PROSPECTS OF TO-DAY'S RACING.
SOME CHOICE SELECTIONS AMONG THE
"ALSO" RANS.”
WHO WILL WIN THE SUBS CHAMPIONS?
[BY MORNING DEW.']
Although the racing to-day will be confined chiefly to the "Also Rans" in the various classes, there is little doubt that the sport provided will be as thrilling as that seen during the earlier days of the meeting.
The principal'
principal event on the card is the Subscription Grifins Champions, the prospects of which is fully dealt with below. The programme opens with three events over five furlongs each for the three classes-subs, grifios, and old ponies. As some very good ponies figure among the non-winners, there should be close finishes and some good times.
Several of the visiting jockeys," including Messrs. Haimovitch, Encarnacao, Wong and Bowling, have returned to Shanghai, but nevertheless there should be plenty of excitement and thrills in the day's sport,
The Hay and Corn" Stakes, I have always maintained that the aubs of this season are nothing like the subs of past seasons, and although this is a race over only five furlongs, and only non-winners are allowed to start, I am afraid I must turn to the old subs to look for winner here. Armony looks a good thing and if Mr. Heard should take him out, he will be a hot favourite, and quite rightly so. Mr. Heard, however, has another very useful animal he can take out Cream Cracker. Both these ponies, if started, can account for the race Piccy and The Jamaica can both, start if they want. to, and I look to these animals to fill the remaining places. Iron Blood, who was second an Wednesday in the last race, may be with the others at the finish, but unless he is well placed at the start, I don't think he can win. There is bound to be a very big field here.

WIN
Hal, after winning the Valley Stakes, has not been able to do anything, in spite of the assistance of Mr. Encarnação. I don't think punters need consider him as a serious proposition to-day's Champions. Done
Again second in the Valley, Stakes, and followed that up by winning the Kalgan Plate from a big field which included Tonbridge. Done Again ap- pears to be a pony good for seven furlongs or thereabouts, but I have my doubts about his being able to stay for the mile and quarter. Loch Fyne won a mile race, was accond in a half-mile, and third in a mile and half race. This is rather consistent performance, and should not be surprised to see him do well to-day over a mile and a quarter.
»
Σ
Tonbridge, after being unplaced on the first day, was second in the Kalgan Plate (once round), second in the Sub Grifins' Challenge Cup, and first by many lengths in the Hong Kong Stakes (11 miles). This The "Loiterer" Stakes.
clearly shows Tonbridge has a As Picalili has never won, he strong claim in, to-day's races, and should account for this race.I should not be surprised to see Picalili has an enviable record. He him win. was a short head behind the winner of the Maidens in that race. He was again a short head behind the winner in the Trial Plate. On Wed. nesday he lost to African Eve, but was the victim of a bad start. To-day he should have almost a "walk-over" in this race. The strongest opposition will come from the
Tango has an even stronger claim, and if he starts I have not the slightest doubt he will be made a hot favourite, especially since he has won on two of the four occa- sions on which he started, and was placed on the remaining occasions. His failure to win the Valley Stakes was undoubtedly due to the Stags," and I fancy both start, which found him badly left. Witty Stag and Windsor Star will In the Hong Kong Stakes he was be sent out. The two animals are carrying a penalty and a new very good for short distances, and jockey, as Mr. Harriman was riding I should not be surprised to see in place of Mr. Nondt. To-day, them both placed in the race-Tango starts with Mr. Noodt on the nossibly one of then winning, if saddle. I do not hesitate to recom. Pical is nanin badiy started. mend him for this race. Silver Queen is an animal which might account for a big dividend here, as five furlongs suit her much better than any other distance.
The All Out" Stakes. Chesapeake Bay. King's Courier, Winsome Stag, and possibly Young Pretender will start here, amongst others. Chesapeake Bar looks a certainty, with Winsome Stag Alling second place and the Dynasty Stable taking third
As regards the chances of Peter Guerney and Billiards I shall not I do not dwell on them at all. think, frankly, that either of these " will do anything.
The United Services" Cup.
I do not know what will start here, but San Francisco-if it goes to the post-should do very well.
The Also Rån Stakes.
I think The Tiger will account
San Francisco ap-for this event over the mile. He nears to be the only other pony has actually run second by a short liable to create an upset, but it is head on one occasion to The Goods,
