The sides were very evenly match- ed and the standard of play was bigh.

CONFETTI HURLED AT

VICARAGE.

PROTEST BY VILLAGERS AFTER BAN ON "COLOUR-

ED STUFF!"

A ban on confetti-throwing at a wedding at Ridge parish church, Herts, caused a lively scene outside the church.

Ridge is a remote rural parish near South Mimms, where the vicar recently deplored the dearth of mar. riages. Weddings at Ridge are even less frequent, and when one does take place the whole village is interested

·

"The bride was Miss Margaret Mand Hengoed, who was employed at South Mimms Sanatorium, and the bridegroom was Mr. Albert Backhurst, of Ridge.

Villagers attended the ceremony armed with bags of confetti. The vicar (the Rev. William Clarke) announced, "None of that coloured stuff must be thrown."

A Fusillade,

The friends of the bride and bridegroom stood outside the porch, and prepared to shower the couple with confetti se they left the church,

The Vicar's View...

When interviewed after the incid ent the vicar emphasised that he would not permit confetti to be thrown down in the church or the churchyard.

"It was a disgraceful affair," he said, alluding to the incident, which occurred at the vicarage on evening of the wedding.

the

"I should be sorry to think that- they were any parishioners of mine," and, to the best of my belief, they

were got.

In Festive Mood. "They were in a festive mood. It was during the holidays, and per- haps one has to make allowances." As an example of this festive spirit the vicar said:

"One man came to ma and ask. ed me how he could bury his wife, I replied, 'Your wife should bury The vicar persuaded the newly- you.' married couple to remain in the vestry for some time after the.cere mony.

On leaving the charch, the bride and bridegroom were met with a fusillade of confetti.

Later in the afternoon, villagers W. R. LOXLEY & CO., from South Mimms and Ridge went

to the vicarage and bombarded it with confetti

(Continued on nart Column.)

"Of course, I know she was not dead. She was not even ill"

"No doubt the removal of such quantities of confetti causes consi- derable labour and expense?" the vienr was asked.

"Certainly," he replied. "Dür sexton died a short time ago."

"Who has been doing the sween- ing since then 1"

"The vicar," was the reply.

A large caste of Hollywood actors McPherson. Among the most effective "shots" as planned will be a scene of the revival evangelist conducting a meeting with her customary circus trimmings and a great throng of devotees.

It will be remembered that Mrs. McPherson paid a visit to England not long ago, but her methods met with complete failure and she soon went back to America.
