Keen racing, big fields, closo finishes and possibly a record or two lowered, should be features of the day at Happy Valley this afternoon, when the five-days Annual Mooting arranged by, the Jockey Club will open..

#

Never before in the history of racing in Hong Kong has such a fine collection of gritas been brought together, and there will be no disappointments in the matter of the size of fields in the racer confined to griffins. The old ponies, are out for blood "this year. Apollo looks as if he will lower a record to-day, and other old ponies are quite capable of achieving the sams feat.

"The subs too, will provide fields which will far exceed in numbers anything we hava seon in the past, and, altogether, the Annual Meeting, promises to be a huge success, if the weather will continue to be as good as it has been during the earlier part of the week.

The new grandstands and the arrangements for the public have been thoroughly inspected, and the provisions for both members and the public should leave no room for complaint,

Kooll is one of the best jockeys ever seen in Hong Kong and can be relied on to make Hunchafo go all out in the half mile. On the whole I think Picey ought to account for the race, with Sonny Boy taking second place and Hong Kong Beau or Dunce third. Much, however, will depend on the start.

.

The China Stakes.

I have heard that Apollo will have no opposition of any worth in this short race. I am certain "Boxing

local short-distance crackerjack," will have a shot at it. The field ought to be quite good in spite of Apollo's presence, and there should be a good race between Boxing Eve and the Chinese-owned bay. Majestic Hall, a nice chest nut belonging to Mr. Ho Kom Tong, who did so well against Boxing Eve. at the close of racing last year, is another starter I expect со вес. He should do well, and may account for Boxing Eve. The race may well see a new local record.

boen fully discussed. At the mo-started, be Mr. Knoll's mount. Mr. Eve, the mont it seems that the Derby lies between three ponies or at best, four. These are Diane Bay, Wisdom Stag, The Tiger and Peppermint. It would be a good thing to member, that whenever these ponics start in races confined to grins. they may be expected to do well, either to-day or on Monday.. Before dealing with the prospects of the ponies racing to-day, however, some notes about the various stables will pot, perhaps, be out of place....

Apollo and the "Stags." Apollo, as I have said, might lower a record to-day. He is start ing in the five furlongs race and ought to fad no difficulty in win ning. He is a rare animal, is well trained and the fact that one of the Derby favourites, Wisdom Stag, is in the same stable speaks volumes for the trainer. Mr. Chan Tin Sion has two other very good animals in Witty and Windsor Stag, and those who like to follow Chinese, owned ponies can do worse than back any of these four ponies when- ever they start.

The Old Course Plate. This is a new race but the condi

such that the lowest tions are weight on the programme for the, event is 152 lbs. There are only five ponies running under 160 lbs and four others are at 179. lbs. As the four top weights are un- doubtedly the best animals, it is difficult to make a selection, as the weight may keep the candidates away. I think here is a race for Young Pretender, who is carrying 103 lbs. The Duke of Chantilly carries 168 as does Monterey Bay. These ponies should take the places if the top weights stay out, but even if the top-weights decide to accept, it will be difficult for them to win.

The Hopeful Stakes.

Peppermint,

The Tientsin Stakes.

The Tiger and African Eve, I understand, will be having it out in this race over a mile confined to griffins. The Tiger is a better animal, but African Eve should be well able to hold him, and to extend him over the mile. too, will go out, but I don't think much of his chances as a mile is too short for him Windsor Stag or perhaps Wisdom Stag will start. If the former, he will not bring home the bacon, but the latter is almost a cert." Victory Hall ray start here and this is his only chance of doing something. The Albatross The Maiden Stakes,

The Dunbar String. Mr. L. Dunbar's best posy at the moment is Diana Bay, who should be with the placed ponies on Derby As regards Mr. Dunbar's candidates, Lobster Bay, Good Hope Bay and Deception Bay, I would like to make the general statement that they are not too good" and I do not expect them to win any races, unless they stand well in the matter of handicap. Correspondenca was read as to why Chinese Athletio were unable to carry out the Senior Shield"re- last play with the Somersets Wednesday, the reason given, was that several players were unable to get away from their offices on week day. A suggestion was made that the fixture be postponed to Saturday, or failing that, the Athletic offered to forfeit the game. The matter was discussed, Mr. Duncan pointing out the desirability of creating a preced- ont by granting a postponement. It was an unfortunate thing, he said, but one which could not be helped. Council decided to accept the offer of the Athletic to forfait the game.

Penalty Rule Discussion. Rulo 17 dealing with penalty kicks came for discussion, a ruling being sought from the Association. The rule reads: "The goalkeeper must stand on his own goal line until the ball is kicked. ... If when a penalty kick is taken the ball passes between the goal-posts, under the bar, the goal shall not be nullified by any infringement by the defending side."

&

The point arose" from the match between the Club and the Navy The latter had been awarded penalty kick, and as the kick was being taken it was alleged that the Club custodian moved about instead of standing still. The referea had blown his whistle for the kick and then he observed the goalkeeper's infringement, and blew it again.

Comdr. Byron produced & news. paper cutting in which the point was dealt with by a famous referes at Home. He argued that the second whistle was wrong, and if that system was adopted thero would be infringements by every individual player. The referes ought to have waited until the result was known, and if the ball went outside the goal, a re-kick should have been
