When Food Makes No Appeal

A failing appetite is one of Nature's danger signals. It is a warning that all is not well with your digestion that your system is not freeing itself punctually and thorough- ly of its daily waste. It is this condition which Eno's "Fruit Salt" corrects,

Eno simply flushes and effectively cleanses the whole intestinal tract and so prevents the inner sluggishness which leads to poor appetite and indigestion. That is why Eno first thing every morning will stimulate your keenness for meal times and enable you to enjoy every morsel of your food.

THE SENSE

Responsibility is a dull-sounding word, but without its functioning properly in the world, there would be Do stability, and no certainty about anything at all.

A highly developed sense of re- sponsibility is the counterpart of Faith

Just as little as we could live without Faith in our lives, so little could we live without a sense of responsibility. "I do not mean" a spiritual Faith, but an unconscious faith in countless things in life which permeate our whole existence. For instance-we believe that the cook hasn't poisoned the soup, therefore, we drink it with equanim- ity; we believe that our chauffeur won't risk an accident, therefore we drive behind him contentedly; we believe the doctor won't put us to sleep forever when we submit to a full anesthotic; we believe that the captain of & ship will steer us safely to port.

But we cannot say we know they will do it, for we really know noth- ing about it, but we have trust in their sense of responsibility.

Had we not the unconscious faith. that this sense was possessed by our nurse, our butler, the police force, our lawyer, and so on, we should surely go mad.

On the Wans.

Everyone who is born into this world la born responsible in some way or another.

We are all responsible to cach other, and, of course, the most re- sponsible are those who bave de finitely undertaken for certain remuneration--to do a certain work thoroughly and to the best of their ability. It is in these positions that one notices signs, that this great sacrament of life-this out- ward sign of inward grace-is some- what on the wane."

A Slogan. "Have a good time" is the slogan ot modern life which rings can tinually in our ears and meets our This "good- eye at every turn. time" attitude, I really do think, tands to lower in a curious way the whole sense of responsibility in the world.

therefore, is tending to lower that man's sense of responsibility.

And one could find countless in- Although stances to prove this. they might in themselves be small, they are, nevertheless, very import

sat ones.

The Great Debi Responsibility walks hand in hand with capacity and power, and those who do not think it is neces- pry to feel their responsibilities, and to act upon theso feelings, will never really create any lasting im pression.

Much misconstruction and bitter ness is spared to those who think naturally and kindly upon what they owe to others.

Nature holds an immense uncol lected debt over, every man's head, and if the master takes no account of his servants they will take no account of him, and the other way about also.

The Plan of Ignorance,

Often one hears: "Oh, but I for- Eot," "Oh, but I didn't know," given as an excuse for some failure in everyday life to exert the sense of responsibility.

We should then remember Rus- kin's words: "The ples of ignor- ance," said he, "will never take away our responsibilities."

THE BUSINESS GIRL.QUEEN'S

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF HER.

Many girls who have just left. school are now preparing to em- bark upon their careers, and 'a large proportion will inevitably take up shorthand and typewriting.

Many of them may be quite un- fitted for this kind of work, but have a vague impression that "any one can learn shorthand and typ- ing."Thir, indeed, is true; but that very fact makes it imperative that the aspirant, to be anything but a mediocrity, must have some thing more to offer than mere me chanical officiency. Moreover, a accretarial career, as much as any other, demands certain definite tem peramental qualifications, and the beginner would do well to bear this in mind, and act to work to cultivate the necessary qualities, if she does not already possess them, Of these essential qualities most 'employers could give first place to adaptability. This impiles adapt- ability to environment and to cir- cumstances, which demands a cer- tain imagination and elasticity. "

It also implies adaptability to the various moods and idiosyn- crasies of her chief, and here a little practical psychology may be called into play..

If his secretary perceives the great man to be in the throes of a uig business man complex, Lers is the part of efficient young woman, quick, competent and systematic When he relapses into jocular mood she may become more human, and show a commendable appreciation of his wit. But woe betide her if ahe attempts the facctious when he ia irritable or preoccupied: then she must become a cipher, an un obtrustive and impersonal machine. All this requires unlimited tact, patience and humour-all qualities to be cultivated.

The final great essential is initia- tive; and although the typist may. of the ladder of real happiness and complain that she has no opportun- success in life, because, after allity of neting independently, aho even from a selfish point of view-will, if she is koen, find plenty of scope, provided her brain is alert if we are not trusted, we are not and is not allowed to grow lazy. really loved.

and she will do well to get her knowledge accurate, for she will find it a great advantage if she can give a ready and confident ans- wer to the many unexpected ques- tions she is sure to be asked. •

She will also be wise to keep au fait with all current affairs, for the perfect secretary is a quick- reference diary of topical ercats and an Encyclopedia Britannica of general knowledge.
