BYRON ON MISCHIEF-MAKING

PLEASANT PEOPLE, COMPENSATE FOR BAD WEATHER.

Thou art in London-in that pleasant place where every kind of mischief's daily browing."

So wrote Lord Byron about the London of his day. Byron was a rea! Londoner, born in Cavendish Square, and although much of his life was spent away from England, he knew London very well and loved the city. And there was sat ficient mischief daily brewing in those days to make the town ex- tremely interesting.

Byron's description of London as a pleasant place fall of mischief may seem a bit exaggerated to a visitor who arrives during a rain or log, and finds himself unable to understand such directions as "bot tom of the footpath, third turning on your left." The only obvious mischief may be the stream of water trickling down the visitor's neck. But a short, residence in the

city is, enough to prove the wisdom of Byron's words. Byron took up residence in St. James's Street in 1815,-and-there are lots of things around London that have not changed much since then, including some of the plumbing. It is still a pleasant plase, with a fair amount of mischief daily brewing.

Paddy and his colleagues can pot "mischief brewing" from my angle or any distance. They have the spirit of the Londoner, who believes that a little mischief is ♬ good thing. If the mischief brew ing at the moment in the reading room is inclining a bit toward the noisy side, Paddy will throw up his hands in mock horror, but will take

The Night Clubs. The night club business prosper ed during 1999, chiefly because Lord Byng and Scotland Yard weeded out the undesirables and put a definite check to a crop of "speak- ensics" that did a flourishing busi sees during their abort existence. There are very few clubs in town that dare serve liquor after hours, for stoner or later the "Byng Boys" will come knocking at the door, and soon thereafter, the door will he closed permanently.
