The companies having ships on the Shanghai-Hankow run have been particularly hard hit. There are 20 Chinese vessels running between these two ports; these are owned, according to the report, by the China Merchants, the Ning-Shao, and San Peh and the Shaoshing S.N. Companies. In previous years. each of these vessels made 34 round trips, the revente per ship per voyage being Tha 8,000. Based on this fact, the income of the four companies concerned should have been not less than Tls. 4,680,000 for 1029 apart from passenger fares. LONDONERS THRILLED BY

CARILLON.
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild
Kould not the late Lord Tenny- son have been delighted to find such an appropriate compliment to the first line of his famous poem as bells ringing out, musically across Hyde Park on New Year's morning!
When the carillon in the strange Members of the Senate Inter-white tower situated in the centre of state Commerce Committee to-day the park sounded for the first time summoned. Hernand Behn, presid- in the damp January air, London- ent of the international Telephoneers had a wonderful new thrill. and Telegraph Company, to appear before them bringing all letters and recorda relating to the proposed merger with Radio Corporation of America.
Owen D. Young, chairman of the board of the Radio Corporation, told the committee to-day that the merger plan was purely tentative, pending enactment of legislation by Congress which would enable that much-discussed merger, of all communication systems in the Unit ed States
The carillon is a set of forty-nine brils weighing fifty tons, which is to form part of the Wellington (New Zealand) War Memorial. It will be shipped to Wellington next summer.
Waves of Rhythm.

The irresistible spell drew them together in a solid mass of appre- ciative listeners":
WASHINGTON, Jan 25.

grey light, was obliterated.
Congresman Kelly said that he expects the House Postal Committee. to begin hearings on the subject within a fortnight.
Among the matters to be on- sidered will be a report on the Commerce Department's intensive study of the subject, with special reference as to whether rates for such air mail should be based upon the pound or upon milenge:
Congressman Kelly believes, he said to-day, that the service should begin with the California-to-Hawaii link, which would later be "erland- cd on to Manila and finally to the China coast, all this being done under necessary agreements with aeronautic concerns.
Experts are also considering the question of charging for space in the planes on a basis similar to that employed in connection with the merchant marine.
Fascinated Listeners. Simply, joyfully, full of the fragrance of the coming days, Men- delssohn's "Spring Song" ebimed itself across the park. Hundreds more fascinated listeners joined the crowd round the carillon.
It was a strange "experience to recede from the bells, to bear their music at a distance and then let them sound just faintly in one's ears until they mingled with the roar of the traffic in Park-lune,
While the bells are in Hyde Park there will be carillon recitals three times a day.
Lord Bledisloe, Governor-General designate of New Zealand, was right in his speech, at the inaugura tion luncheon-Londoners will want a set of carillon bells for themselves when those whose music they are now enjoying have gone overseas,"
