THREAT TO ORCHESTRAS. THE FUTURE OF MECHANICAL
MUSIC.
[Caited Press.]
PARIS, Dec. 23. The great masses of orchestras in the world may be wiped out by the development of mechanical music, according to Jean Grimond, noted French ̈mseic-critic. Em- phasising that concerts are being given to day in Paris and other parts of the world without the pre- sence of musicians, he foresees the day when people will be as fond of these impersonal renditions as they are of the movies. He says that once the public is accustomed to hearing an orchestra without seeing it, there may no longer be need of many musicians.
In an article in the newspaper, Le Quotidien, Grimond enumerates the various mechanical methods whereby music is recorded for pos- terity and distributed to the four- corners of the world. One of the most important devices in respect is the simplifier as used for both the phonograph and the radio.
