Mr. Midwood's unfortunate accid- ent, which was to handicap him so badly later on in life, occurred on May 4, 1597, on the second day of Riding the spring race meeting. "Black and White" in the first race of the day, the half-mile sprint for the Chu-Ka-Za Cup, he was thrown against the rails when his pony slipped on a treacherous piece of turf near the Widow's Monu- ment, and from the rails bounced off into the creek. Fortunately Chinese police constables were on duty on the inside course then as now, and one of them pulled him out or else he would have been drowned.

He was unconscious for several weeks, and next year went Home for treatment, coming back to Shanghai and carrying on with his riding indeed be won his second Champions in 1000. It was not until 1906 that his neck began to trouble him, and he did not retire from business until 1919.
