They depend, too, on the galue of the stake. Presuming that the event is worth eighty-five guineas, the fee is en guineas for a winning and five guineas for a losing mount.
There are indications that a vast and growing body of public opinien is definitely hostile to any further appearances in the ring by the giant who cannot fight, cannot Lontrol his temper, and cannot be regarded as anything more than a commercialised mankiller.
Mr. James Douglas, in a vigor. ously phrased denunciation of Car. nera savagery, recently demanded Gordon Richards, the flat cham-(but without effect) that for the Home pion of the year, would, apart good name of Britain the

Michael Beary would, however, as the jockey retained by HH: the Prime Aga Khan, who won nearly £40,000 in stakes, be the best off..

"It is the duty of the police," he writes, "to prevent murder and manslaughter. Carnera is incapable of self-control.
"Ho has already shown that he may kill his opponent. He may kill the referee.. He may kill one of his seconds. It is a national disgrace to tolerate another ex hibition like this."
In his objection to the Carnera fight, 31r. Douglas had the support of Lord Lonsdale, the wisest and most influential man in British sport
Lord Lonadale declared that--
"We (the British Board of Con- trol) should not put Carnera in the ring. He doesn't conform to our idea of how a fighting man should behave.
