To-day sees the opening of the Challenge) Shield

competition. There are four games, one in the Senior and three in the Junior.

The Senior game will now be contested on the Garrison ground at Sookunpon. St. Joseph's have shown a falling-off of late, and unless the unforeseen happens to day will take their exit from the Shield competition. Shield ties are uncertainties, and anything might happen. Usually, the first side to score wins the game, and the S.L. I. have everything in their favou: to

Their defeat by the. score early. Police last week will probably teach them a lesson, and they will go in from the kick-off to win the game.

The Junior game on the Garrison ground between the SL. I. and R. Navy should be keenly contested, and with the S. L.I. reserves now at full strength, the Navy will not get a walk-over.

LAWN TENNIS.

OPEN DOUBLES.

THE PROSPECTS.

On the whole, the draw for the Open Doubles Championship of the Colony is very satisfactory, both from the Tournament and com petitors' points of view. The strong pairs are distributed all over, so that present indications point to a very interesting finish, while atten- tion in the opening sound will centre upon the performances of new pairs, especially Sullivan-Redmond, and A LRumjahn-Cassumbhoy.

The Rumjaha cousins are, of course, favourites," but they will have to be in fine form during the whole season to win. Tennis fans will no doubt recall that they were down 3-5 in the final set against Honda and Akiyama, in 1928, and 1-2 sets down against Goldmaa and McEachran last year." H.D. is reliable and be can always produce average form, but much depends on SA. who is mercurial on the courts showing alternate good and poor ferm. How he happens to be play- ing re-acts on his partner, and this means an element of uncertainty when they take the courts.

They are in the fourth quarter, whero Ng Sze Kwong and Ng Sze Cheung are also placed and these two pairs are pretty sure to meet sooner or later as the other con- testants are not formidable Honda and Akiyama, runners-up in 1928, are in the third quarter, meeting T Grose and Yew Man Kit, a young and ambitious pair, in the first round. Sewoll and McEachran, should also do well in this bracket. while A. L Rumjaha and Cassum bhoy will have to be: considered. They have shown up very well at practice so far, and are capable of extending any pair in the Toarna grent.
