Almost a hundred ponies in the various classes, preparing for the Annual Race Meeting which is now only five weeks ahead, were clocked over the week-end at Happy Valley,

From the list given below readers will notice one outstand- ing performance, that is the gallop of Apollo over a mile, which this animal covered in 2.06 Apollo's first quarter-mile was com pleted in 14 seconds, and it took him exactly 57.3 seconds to cover the half-mile. Then it was noted that the riding-boy was pulling him for all he was worth, but in spite of this he completed the mile in 2.06, which is certainly the best gallop seen during any training season in Hong Kong. Some details of this "crzeker.. jack's record can be found elsewhere on this page. The gallop ‚was so unusual that many of the rail "fans" doubted the ac- curacy of their watches when the first quarter of 97 was returned A very large number of Derby 'ponies' were clocked, many over the whole Derby distance. The Tiger, which is much fancied now, went over a mile in 3.14.3, finishing in 30.3 seconds, which is very good indeed. Picallili was running very well, and his time is very encouraging. The "Jardine" ponies attracted a good of at- tention, and some of their griffins appear to be improving steadily and will no doubt get into the limelight very" soon.

Mr. Ho Kom Tong galloped his string yesterday, President. Hall doing a particular good gallop. His Derby ponies also are shaping very well.

New record figures for greyhound. racing attendances were announced by Lord Askwith when he presided at a dinner of the National Grey- hourd Racing Society at the Savoy Hotel last month, "The oficial figures collected by the Society." he said, "show that in 1927 the number of people who paid for, ad- mission to greyhound racecourses was 5,043,885, and that in 1928 that figure increased to 13,500,000 for the eleven months ended November 30. This year, in a period of only nine months racing, the total at- tendances in tracks licensed by the National Greyhound Racing Club has swelled to 14,680,021. Since November 30 the 15,000,000 mark has been easily passed, and taking a pro rata increase, we can say with certainty that the 16,000,000 mark, if not actually passed, will at any rate have been closely approached,”

Of the total of 15,000,000, Lord Askwith added, London had up to the end of November contributed 7,320,077 (an increase of 978,553); Manchester 1,028,746 (an increase of 225,758); Glasgow 1,443,203: "Br. mingham 409,261: and Cardiff 670,001 (an increase of $5,000). 0: the total "gate" receipts of approxi ||-mately." £1,100,000 during 1920, 2107,819 had gone in entertainment tux, 2216,300 in rewards for races won, while the companies had con. tributed £8,251 to charities.

The following is reprinted from the Hong Kong Daily Press of De cember 18, 1990, when in the course of an article on local racing, our correspondent Morning Dew" wrote the following about the crackerjack, Apollo:—

42.3-5 seconds.. "In the same year he ran second to Warrenfield in a mile and a quarter race. Warren- feld's time was 2 minutes, 20.7-6 seconds, and Apollo was only “a head" behind.

In 1928 Apollo, carrying 160 lbs., broke the half-mile record in 53.4-5 seconds. In the earlier part of this year he again lowered the half-mile record, doing the distancë in '55.1-5. seconds with 170 lbs. in the saddle." He added still further laurels to Apollo is officially recorded as his brilliant record this year by standing 13 hands and inch. He accounting for a mile race, in 1 isa Kiangnan, griffin of 1927 and; minute, 50 seconds while carrying needless to add, is a "2" class; 165 lbs. This not all, for this animal. In 1827 he broke two re- summer he did the three-quarters cords, doing the three-quarters of of a mile in 1 minute, 28.1-5 seconds,
