It would seem Palais Royal L is at home over all sorts of dist- ances, for twenty-four hours later he took on Fairway for the Jockey „Club Cup, a race which is run over two and a quarter, miles. NOTES ON YESTERDAY'S GALLOPS.
[BY MORNING DEW."}
With entries closing on Saturday several stables took the op- portunity at yesterday morning's gullops to give their candidates" a real try-out, and the times, consequently were much faster,
There is much apcculation na to which stable possesses the best ponies. From the training. form displayed to date, it is difficult to say, but readers who would like to take a long shot" at the Derby may do well by following Picallili, from the Hynes and Mackie stable.
In selecting Picallili from such a big, classy, but untried field, I know I am going against the opinion of many
" who "experts frequent the rails from day to day. But those who have follow- ed the training times in the Daily Press regularly will notice that Picallili's gallops have always been convincing, and his perfor mance yesterday was no exception. He has not been pushed at all so far, and as he moves freely he should be very prominent dur ing the races. To-date, therefore, Picallili appears the best of the Derby griffins.
in the next few weeks perhaps, other animals will occupy Ficallili's present place in the list of favourites," but even though Picallilf may not win the Derby, he will be almost certainly one of the big noises" at the meeting.
The Jardine" stable tried out their candidates also, and the time of Four Clube, which teaders will find below, at once at tracts attention. The Jardine" string took second and third places in the Derby at the last annual meeting, and from this fact alone the progress of their candidates is worth watching.
The grass course was throwaopen yesterday, and those ponies which preferred to exercise on the proper course instead of the sand track were all timed. These are put in a separate section in the figures given below.
Mr. Dunbar's Deception Bay went over a slow mile, bat put up a fast last-quarter of 30.1-5 seconds. The Tiger went over the full Derby distance for the first time. He moved impressive- ly, and although the first half-mile was slow, the last mile was very good and the last quarter-mile of 30.2-5 seconds is convine. ing.
King's Bounty was also prominent and the fans are still Gay waiting to get an insight of this pony's real prowess. Cebellero, of whom I have written before, was disappointing, and I am afraid he is not such a good outside chance after all. It seems that Gay Cabellero is getting rather too "gay" in his style, and, what is more surprising, is being allowed to have his own way. He appeared "all out" at the end of yesterday's gallop, which readers will ånd below.
The subs are still going strong," but Peashop is beginning to show the fret signs of stinking." The animal is developing the bad habit of refusing to gallop between the six and five-fur- Inng posts, but no doubt he will be cured of this very soon, as un- doubtedly Mr. Soares knows just exactly how to handle Peashop.
Grenadier did a useful three-quarter mile, finishing strongly. This animal and Baby Face will take a lot of beating in their class. The latter did.a mile in 2.21.4, finishing in" 31.4 seconds. Both Shanghai Beau and Hong Kong Benu did fast miles, but Tango was held, being sent out to slow work.

The Coronation Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup always bear a close resemblance but the race decided on the Royal Heath is usually re- garded the pièce de résistance. Fairway and Athford have been nominated for both events, but is is possible they will miss Epsora and oppose each other a week later, when the Australian erack Strephon II. and Sir Cosine can also join in. Fairway stands out as the best colt we have had for a long time, even though his record was tarnished as
result of going under to Royal Minstrel for the Eclipse Stakes. I shall make no excuses for that de fent, but I am certainly of the opinion the son of Phalaris would have won the Derby in 1928 but for working himself up into a nervous state of excitement. Fairway be-
