Business on our local market has not been quite no active since the
date of our last report, there being some shrinkage in dealings, and though there have been improve ments in several stocks, rates on the whole have shown a slightly easier tendency. At the close the market has recovered tomewhat and showsTM signs of strengthening,
Banks --Hong Kong and Shanghai Banks have further dropped to £116 (Middle) in London, and sales were made locally at $1.250 to $1,310.
Marine and Fire Insurances. —— Sterling Exchange" has declined "gradually all the week, and this has brought out more enquiry for Uniona, which have changed hands
at $370 to 8375. China Fires were

It has been suggested that ship. yards which had remained idle for long period and therefore were probably ill-equipped with old plant and machinery, and whose organisa tion was rusty, should be scrapped. Such a scheme presented a partial $18 solution of the problem, provided the scrapping value was a reason- able one.
