GOLF NOTES.

[Br" WRYNECK."]

I understand that the Committee of the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club regret that, in the Press report of the annual meeting, a reference was made that seemed to reflect on the Country Club (therein described as the International Club).

The Committee of the R.H.K.G.C. are quite satisfied that balls lost on their course are not on sale, or offered for sale, on the premises or course of the Country Club, and are assured that they have the sym- pathetic co-operation of the officials of the Country Club, who will do

all that is possible to prevent the sale of used balls to their members in the vicinity of the Club.

Eagles and Birdies. Few if any people can ever have beea in a similar position to Shewan and his partner Lawrence on New Year's Day, when they were play ing in a four-ball match against Andrews and Ferguson. They were cut in a best ball score of 36, and found themselves 5 down. Fergu son bad-goue out in 32! One eagle, four birdies, three bogeys, and one hole in one over bogey, and the best ball score of the four-31. Unfortunately this, could not last on the inward half, and Ferguson took 42 to come home, 74 for the eightean holes. Not a bad sporu start the New Year with, and he was not being given two foct putts.

Dedwell's and Deacon's just, man- The aged to scramble through. latter were dormie one down to the C.P.R., and would have lost on the 16th green had it not been for a worm-alleged to be subsidised by Marton-which raised its bead at moment inappropriate for the fortunes of the C.P.R. It deflected putt which was going straight into the hole, enabling Deacon's to square the match. In consequence of this we hear that the worm is likely to lose its amateur status.

Worm Casts.

Talking of worms, or rather of crickets or whatever the mammal or insect may be which makes those little mounds of earth with a hole in the middle, if they become much 'more 'active there will soon be no grass left on some of the fairways, notably in front of the 5th, th, 13th, and 16th greens, and we shall bo pitching and running up on loose 4arth!

BISHOP'S VIEWS OF MARRIAGE LAWS.

"CHURCH SHOULD BLESS CIVIL UNIONS."

The Bishop of Norwich, Dr. Bertram Pollock, in a pamphlat published on "Disestablishment and the Prayer-book," deals with many important problems affecting the Church and the nation.

41

He writes on the question of mar- riage laws::

"Our marriage laws, and the laws relating to marriage preliminaries,. certainly need overhauling.

It would scarcely pass the wit of man to devise some scheme of marriage which would ensure that the marriage became in all cases a civil matter, while the Church only blessed, subsequently, but im- mediately, the unions of which it approved.

"This is an intricate matter, and no pas who has paid attention to it could fail to be aware of tho difficulties arising in sentiment and in practice and in the defini- tion of what should be regarded as the Church in this matter of giving or withholding its blessing.

"Some change seems desirable; for, ne things are, neither banns ncr the bishop's marriage licence escape the charge of failing to do what ought to be done.

The well is situated outside the back door of his house, and was covered with a slab of stone. Heavy rain had loosened the soil around the stone, which gave way when Mr. Sales walked on it, and he dropped into the well.

Mrs. Sales ran into the street and obtained the assistance of Mr. Harry Exeter, who went for a lad der, but by the time he returned a quantity of earth had fallen into the well.

A rope was secured, and Mr. Exeter was lowered into the well, but he found that the stone slab had become wedgen about thirty feet down, and Sales was appar ently below.

A tripod was then fixed on the surface and a chain placed round the slab, which could not be moved. The effort caused tons of earth to fall into the well. The conditions became dangerous, and the rescuers, who included a special squad of police from Dartford, abandoned work when darkness came..

"When I first went down the well I heard Mr. Gales shout twice," said. Mr. Exeter.

"Earth was falling into the well all the time. I volunteered to go to the bottom, but the police super- intendent would not let me."
