DRAW WITH PORT VALE.

High scores were again registered in the English League matches on Saturday. The meeting between Blackburn Rovers and Man- chester United produced nine goals, the paints going to the former on the odd goal. Portsmouth and Sheffield United each won by 7-1 at home against Burnley and Leicester respectively.

Were

- Blackpool, Bradford and Bury in the Second Division all heat the visitors by five goals to one, while the Wolves, playing at Four matches home, scored six goals against Bradford.

the visiting were drawn and in only two instances teams successful, Bristol City achieving the good performance of point at Chelsea six goals to one at Reading. Oldham's loss of one places them on an even footing with Blackpool in the top position. Plymouth, leaders in the Southern Section, were beaten by. Brentford, their close rivals, but they still continue to lead. Barrow standing at the bottom of the Northern Section created a big surprise at home by sharing the points with the leaders, Port

In the modern Navy nothing will

Duc. That comfortable process known as the natural course of evolution has been distorted by science. At the opening of the Keyham Extension Works when the King Edwards represented the last word "an advance of only 1,300 tons on their predeces sors, and of less than 1,500 tons upon the

Majestics" "of twenty years earlier we thought we could look ahend to as long as Devonport Dockyard was likely to endure. Had this not been so, it would have been easy enough to make the Key ham locks twice their size. But to-day no man will attempt to fore cast the material composition of the Navy 20 years hence unless he is of those who deride the fear of the angels to tread. And what has this got to do with Singapore! Strate gically, perhaps nothing. But as à modifying factor upon the charac ter of the work still to be done. possibly a great deal. The original idea of the great undertaking was to serve as a battle fleet base. My recollection of Keppel Harbour and 1 the sheltered anchorage beyond is that there is ample accommodation for a great fleet. The floating dock which was towed out in 1928 can take any Dreadnought, and the new has King's (commercial) Dock dimensions-834ft. x 10cft, by 31ft.

I have no knowledge as to what is 70 Bonds of £100 Each, Numbered: proposed in the way of solid masonry works, but it is very obvious that if the big warship of the future is to be a vessel of about 12,000 tons it would be supereroga- tory to develop graving basins for the reception of such ships as now form the battle line. Seeing that there is a very reasonable prospect if a peep into the future during the course of the Five-Power Con- ference which is to open 90 com- paratively soon, I repeat that I think the Government has done a "mark perfectly wise thing to time at Singapore.
