TOBACCO FIELDS.

IN ENGLAND.

NEW INDUSTRY FOR CORNISH FARMERS.

A new prospect for Cornish farmers and horticulturista is open- ed up by the success attending experiments which are being made in tobacco-growing in the Duchy.

Tests have been carried out at the Cornwall County Council's ex- perimental station at Galval. The plants were stalked and debudded on orthodox lines, and some excel- lent leaves were produced, which, Recording to Mr. H. W. Abbins, the county horticultural superintendent, were quite ne fine as, or, finer than, those produced in any other parts of England, or in the tobacco dis- tricts of France.

"Indications go to show," says Mr. Abbiss, that Cornwall, pro- vided sufficient curing arrangements" ean be made, has great possibilities for the growing of tobacco."

Mr. Charles Morris has for some years been growing tobacco experi- mentally at Devoran, not far away. "I have seen tobacco growing in New Zealand, Australia, China, and India," he says, "and it can be grown quite as easily in Cornwall. It will grow luxuriantly and with great success in southern aspects and with deep rich soil.

"JIX" KEEPS HIS SECRETS.

WHAT HE KNOWS OF LONDON BELOW THE SURFACE".

Lord Brentford (Jix") knows a lot about the life of London below the surface. But he is quite deter mined not to reveal his secrets.

He made this intriguing little

confession last month.

"There are certain happenings

in London which are used to break in New Home Secretaries.

The crop requires only ordinary gardener's care and attention. As soon as the flower comes it most be pinched off, and you have to keep debudding when the side shoots appear. This forces the plants. If you want really tip-top tobacco, tạn leaves are enough on cuo stalk. The leaves grow to a height of 895 about three feet.

Frost Danger.

The only thing to look out for are the early irosta. I plant my seed early in February, and this year I harvested a crop early in August. The bulk of it is now thoroughly sun-dried and ready for uring. I have experimented with Kentucky, Golden Virgina, "Mary- land, Havana, and Pennsylvania varieties, and find that Golden Vir- gica is the best.

"I will back my Golden Virginia, sun-dried in the old-fashioned way, against any Virginia in the world," and I intend to continue growing this for my own consumption, but I shall keep experimenting with other kinds,

"I am convinced that tobacco can be grown in Cornwall at a cost of threepence a pound exclusive of labour, or eightpence or ninepence In pound-one shilling at the out- side-taking the cost of labour into the calculation."

Some time ago 4. Cornishman living in Rhodesia suggested the starting of a tobacco-growing in- dustry in his native county, being convinced that Cornwall was as favourable a place for it as Rhode- sia. He offered to come home and give a year's inetruction to farmers in the cultivation of the plant" if they would guarantee him tain sum, but his offer was not Accepted.
