THE DEAN'S APPEAL TO THE LAITY.

HELP AND CO-OPERATION IN MEETING PRESENT DAY INDIFFERENCE.

ST. JOHN'S CATHEDRAL'S NEW GOVERNING BODY.

WHAT IT IS HOPED TO ACCOMPLISH.

Preaching at St. John's Cathedral yesterday morning the Dean (the Very Rev, 4. Swann) made a strong appeal to members of the дем the congregation to send in their names for enrolment on Electoral Roll, and to make the new constitution of the Cathedral an effective instrument for the furtherance of the work of the Church in the Colony. The Church was laced with a great mass of indifference and some opposition. The active help of all who held to her Faith was urgently needed, and this new plan was to secure closer co-operation between clergy and laity.

THE NEED TO GO FORWARD.

But don't think of this merely as something to take the place of the old electorate of scatholders and subscribers. It is that, but also much more. It is an opportu nity for every person who desires to see the work of the Cathedral and the Churth generally, to go forward to take a definite part and make his voice heard.

NEW CLUB FOR CHINESE.

TSUNG TSIN ASSOCIATION BUILD ON MORRISON HILL.

THE OPENING CEREMONY.

The Hakka section of the Chi- neso community were At Home " to their friends on Saturday, when their new Clubhouse at Happy Valley, styled the Tsung Tain In- dustrial and Commercial Associa tion was formally opened.

The Association was founded as far back as 1919, some very pro- minent Chinese residents of the Colony being among the list of founders, but it was not until Saturday, that they moved into premises which were in keeping with the high objects of the Arso- ciation, namely, to unite all Häkka people; promote business and social relationship with other people;! assist members in business; im prove working conditions in fac- tories owned by members; act as arbitrations in case of disputes; encourage genius and talent in the community; establish libraries and free schools, assist charity, and above all, to provide a social meet- ing place for members of the Hakka community.

The building is the first com- pleted structure to go up on Mor rison Hill since work, was started on that site some years ago in connection with the Praya East Reclamation. It is a three storied building on European lines, though on catering the portals, one is struck by the Chinese character of the decorations and general ar- rangements.

At that meeting we will elect a new Church Council, a body of shout 24, and we hope great things from this. This Council will have

The great part of the planning of the new constitution has been prompted by the desire to effect this. We want your interest and co-operation to make this machi- nery effective. Under the new ordi bance we are to form an Electoral

The new ordinance will create a Board of Trusteca who will be ultimately re- sponsible for the property of the Church of England in the Colony and for the maintenance of Church of England Churches. But they will delegate to Church Councils power to manage the current affairs of their respective Churches.

There will therefore be a Cathe dral Church Council which will supersede the Church Body. The Cathedral Church Council will be a larger body, and more representa- tive of different sections of the Cathedral Congregation.. In fact inore laymen and women will be admitted into the management of Cathedral affairs.

The Church Body used to be ele eted at the annual meeting of ecatholders and subscribers who alone had a vote in this election, On the abolition of pew rents seat- holders will cease to exist and the eld electorate will disappear. Un- der the new ordinance a roll of electors will take its place. `

In future, in order to have a vote at the Annual Church Meeting in the election of the Cathedral Council and other matters affecting

the Cathedral, all that will be necessary for those desiring to have this vote will be to

enter themselves on the Cathedral Elec- toral Roll. No financial qualifica tion will be required, only a stafe- ment that the applicant is of the required age and is a member of the Church, of England.

We are most anxious that all whe are so qualified shall enroll them-. solves, so as to be able to take an active part in Cathedral manage- ment.
