HOME FOOTBALL RESULTS.

SECOND ROUND OF F.A. CUP MATCHES,

HEAVY SCORING AGAINST VISITING TEAMS,

THREE DRAWN GAMES.

Three matches were drawn when the second round of the F.A."Cup series was played on Saturday. Teams outside the Third Division have been elim'nated with the exception of Carnarvon and Soun- thorpe whose fate will be decided in the replays. Northampton, at home, had a 6-0 victory over Margate, and Coventry scored geven out of the eight goals resulting from their meeting with Bath City,

In League matches, all the four teams at the top of the First Division played at home and they defeated the visitors. Grimsby in a visiting role made a great effort against Derby County, but they were beaten by the odd goal in nine. Blackpool, leaders in the Second Division and the only team in that section without a drawn game, shared the points with Bradford City.

Glasgow Rangers give promise of regaining the leading position from Aberdeen shortly. The latter dropped one point in their away match with Queen's Park.

Resull's of Saturday's matches as cabled by Reuter and revised League tables follow:-

ENGLAND'S “ARCHAIC MODE OF LIFE."

. André Maurois, the French- writer, paid some humorous tributes to the British when he addressed the Anglo-French lunchean club in London.

"There is a feeling between France and England that does not exist between any other countries,' he said. "The other day I was at Geneva, and I heard a very high British delegate to the League of Nations say, France and England are like the father and mother of Europe. But, unfortunately, the children. sometimes hear them dis agrée. Mother and father must, of course, argue sometimes, but they must not do so in front of their children. Europe takes its lead from the mother and father, and when they are not in agreement Europe is in disorder.

"Let the English people be all for the British Empire, but they must also realise that Europe is in need of them. What I admire. about your country is the tran- quillity of the place and people. You retain your calm in an epoch when everyone is hurrying, and at a time when everyone wants to see as much as they can there are peo ple in the British villages who have Been nothing.
