At first the germs attack the wound and then they may make their way into the interior of the body by means of the blood stream and so produce one of the many types of condition_ which the lay mind calls "blood poisoning."

The Consumption Scourge, Take another common disease like consumption. As you all know quite well, consumption is very common indeed, aut only in Hong Kong but all over the world.

Typhoid fever is always with us and so i small pox and malaria, Diphtheria is also common here and added to these, are the venereal diseases. But I must not take up too much of your time.. Suffice for me to say that even to-day scien- tista all over the world are finding and getting more and more evid ences to convict the micro-or- ganisms.

The Common Gold. Let me end by saying a few

the words about common cold. More suffer from common cold than, from any other single ailment. It is impossible to estimate just how many suffer from it but if the sum total of suffering, inconveniences, requelae and economic foss result ing from cold could be obtained, I am sure this illness would at once cease to be looked upon as a trivi- Ful disorder,

In America nearly 10 per cent of all deaths are due to this disease. In Germany, nearly 12 per cent. In China the figures are even higher. This disease not only attack man but also various animals including cattle, monkeys, birds or even fish. Man may even become infected by drinking miik from sick cows.

Consumption is really a terrible disease and the loss of life and wealth yearly is appalling. It is man's universal scourge, well deserving the name of "Captain of the men of Death" by Bunyan.

My paper should end here but this morning, a friend of mine,| when he found out that I was go- ing to broadenst asked me if it few could be possible to say n words about that popular pas time-at least, he said it is a popu- ar pastime--which goes something like this:. The approximation and apposition of two pairs of obicu- lares ores, spasmodic inspiratory efforts (often violent) which ends in a suction click of variable intens- ity. At first it sounded more like something terrible than a pastime

Pneumonia is another very pre- valent and fatal disease. In the U.S.A. about 10 per cent. of all deaths are due to this disease. Many germs can cause pneumonia but the great number of cages are due to the special pneumonia germ. It attacks all ages but it is more dangerous at the extremes of life. Sir William Osler said, "Pneu monia may well be called the friend of the aged. Taken off by it in an acute, short, not often painful illness the old escapes those cold gradations of decay that make the last stage of all so dis tressing." In Hong Kong, pacu- monis exacta a very heavy toll.
