He became a member of the Legislative Council and was associated with many of the Colony's business activities. Sir Gerehom went Home in. 1900 and in 1910 liecame Conservative member for the Wirrel Division of Cheshire. His great knowledge of the Far East after proved of value in the House of Commons, and he came to be regarded as the "mem her for Hong Kong," and for the British community in Chien and Japan generally. Sir Gershom re tired from politics in 1925, anıl it was typical of his popularity that constituents of both parties united to make a presentation to Sir Ger- shom of his portrait in oil by 3r. F. T. WARSAW, Dec. 5. Despite the recent cleavages the Diet opened this morning without incident and proceeded on quiet lines with the agenda which in- cluded the Budget and the revision of the Constitution.
The only reference made by the Speaker, M. Dastinski, to the mili tary invasion of Parliament was his expression of the conviction that the army should keep aloof from politics. The Dictator, Mar- shal Pilsudski, was absent from the Session.
Early last month, apparently annoyed with certain Parliamen tary activities, he took 100 armed officers to the Diet and overawed the Deputies. The Speaker defied him on that occasion and refused to open the proceedings until No.
Presumably the next step will be to take the matter up with English growers with a view to securing trir co-operation, but quite Trunk ly we have no faith the proposals and do not think they will meet with anything like general approvalvember 5. on this side in spite of the fact that a prominent London broker stated last week that any proposals would receive favourable consideration.

A serious clash between the Diettator and Parliament seemed inevitable but the President inter- vened and prevented a clash. M. Moselchi sided with Pilsudski and ordered an adjournment until to- day, thus circumventing the action of M. Dastinski who, in défiance of Parliament convened the Diet for November 5, taking precautions to avoid further military interrup- tion. The Deputies then expressed the opinion that the Dictator had hestated to bring matters to a
