MUSIC FOR SCOUTS.

(BY LIECT. GENERAL LORD BADEN-POWELL.)

(Special to "Hong Kong Daily Press" All Rights Reserved.),

When I first went to my old public | I would always impress upon school, Charterhouse, the celebrated singers, and that is this: John Hullah was Music Master

not be conceited about it and merely sing to win applause..

He took us new boys into the beautiful old tapestried, room at in the Charterhouse the room

So when you sing, sing with your heart-end with reverence.

Team singing is a healthy and health giving exercise and is also one of the most."happitying It turned out afterwards that one forms of exercise that I know. You lot was composed of likely singers never see Scouts or Guides at a for the choir, the other lot had camp fire sing-song looking any either no voice or no ear, while I,thing but cheery and happy. poor me, was judged to have a "falsetto" voice.

How Mr. Hullah discovered this as I was only a shrill treble then, I don't know-but it was quite true. I was shoved into the choir and there I remained for six years. When my talking voice broke "

I was still able to sing and by the end of my time at school I was able to take any part needed, whether soprano,, alto, tenor or haritone.

I don't say I had a good voice

in any of them-for I had not--but I was just passable for general use

in chorus singing.

Well, I enjoyed that a great deal more than if I had been a salo

Then, too, through singing you

if it is a thing where he has not can bring pleasure into the lives of had to work hard for it, is very apt to become swollen headed.

This is particularly the case with singers,

The only cure for swollen head is a stern and sure application at the other end 1

But where a fellow does chorus work he enjoys putting his voice, into it, not for his own glorification but for the honour of the team. This means every boy singing his best but modulating his voice to be in proper harmony and proportion to the rest: In other words play ing in his place and playing the game not for himself but for his side.

But even choirs can become too cocky about themselves sometimes if peuple make too much fuss of them. There is one point therefore that

THANKSGIVING SERVICE.

FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST, HONG KONG. "Thanksgiving" was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in First Church of Christ, Scientist, on Thursday, November, 28.

The Golden Text was: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands: Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise be thankful unto him, and bless his name" (Psalms 100: 1, 4).

Among the citations which com- prised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "O Give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good for his mercy endureth for ever, Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy: And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, west, from the north, and from the south. And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and de- elare his works with rejoicing" (Pk 107: 1-3, 92).

The Lesson-Sermon also includ- ed the following passages fram the Christian Science tex-book, "Science and Health with Key to

or

So I would urge every Scout and Guide who has any voice at all to use it to the best advantage and for the happiness of as many people as possible.

In this way it will bring true happiness to its owner.

JOCK, JOE AND A FULL- BLOWN ROSE.

(CONTRIBUTED.)

"Another Bower day! What is it all about? I can understand poppy day saw a bit of the war myself, so I can pity the poor wounded beggars, disabled for life, but what is this rose day?'"

There was a touch of impatience in the speaker's voice, as he flicked the ash from his fragrant cigar and looked enquiringly at his older сотраціоп.

Rose Day is the day when the little bud of your sympathy should have blossomed into charity. The rose is a symbol of love, rich in colour, rich in perfume, rich in the variety of its shades. The Vincent

de Paul Society have taken the rose as their emblem on this day when they ask you to plant the rose of a kindly deed in the gar- dens of the poor which are flower less."

"I don't quite grasp your mean- ing!"

"Oh it's simple. I'll tell you why I became a member of the Vincent de Paul Society."

"You want to Sope me in?" "Ah, no We don't want circus listen to my tale. It centres want free chargers! ponics: we round one of your friends-old Jock who had lost both legs in battle. sweet shop and by writing letters He earned his pittance in a small for the unlettered.

"One day there came to him a tity wisp of a boy, barely clad in the miserable rags

which were thrown round his shivering little body and with the peculiarly pinch ed face of those who are wizened not by years but by the grip of poverty crushing the tender bud of life in its very effort to expand."

"Well, little 'un," said Jock,.! "what do You want some

sweeties?"

N-N-G-o," said wee Joe, clutch- ing a five.ceat piece in his closed ist for lear that it would follow the hungering glance of his eyes. I "I want a letter writ: how ow much ill it be "

Ten cents, addie: ten cents, all writ in court style

The little fist relaxed its grip: Joe looked sadly at the five-cent piece temptation swept his soul if he could not have the letter why

not satisfy the gnawing hunger with some of the good things on Jock's stail? Then he thought of his mother and two big tear drops glistened in his eyes.

"Come, come, laddie, I'll write the letter," spid old Jock. "It won't cost you tan cents (dropping his voice), no nor one cent anyther. What's the name of the party?"

Vincent de Paul' Jock writes: Wiacint day Paul. "Good! Where "does he live "

Jock sat back and grapod, but ! there was a quaintness and ein- || cerity about the boy which won his heart. He'd see it through,

Tell him that me mother fell asleep soon alter, and the baby is crying and I can't wake me mother, and ask him to wake her." Old Jock sat bolt upright; had this poor woman died of hunger, with food shops all around!" "How did you try to wake, her, lady"

I took her two hands, and kiss ed her face. She was cold, cold, very cold, but she ain't got no blanket."

"Did she move, was she breath- ing t

Old Jock has now an nesistant in his little stall, and Joe has an adoptive father.

The young man threw away hie unfinished cigar and turned sharp- ly to his companion: "But is this trus? Do these things happen?".
