WELL-KNOWN JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN SHANGHAI.

Shanghai.-The well-known Jap-") anese restaurant and garden in Dixwell Rond, known as Tsukinoya, was totally gutted in a fire which broke out shortly after two o'clock on Tuesday morning. Other build. ings destroyed were a retton waste gedown belonging to the Shimizu Cotton Waste Co., a rubber godown, a Chinese copper-smith and machine. shop and several Chinese dwelling houses.

The fire is believed to have been due to internal combustion among the cotton waste. Panned by a strong and bitterly cold northern wind, the flames quickly spread to the surrounding buildings and soon involved the Japanese houses in the. Tsukinoya Garden.

Messages were at once sent to the Settlement and Chapei Fire Brigades, both of which were on the scene within a couple of minutes, n machine from Central Station arriving within five minutes of the call. Four machines attended from the Hongkow Division.

Apart from the cotton waste which gave the firemen no end of trouble, the Japanese structures, built as they were of wood and
