HOW DID HE GET THE NOTES?
CONTRADICTORY EVIDENCE.
A good deal of public interest was ahown in the proceedings which commenced yesterday at Central Magistracy against a shop joki, named Cheung Ching" Shan, of the Lee Fung Hang firm, who was charged with possessing and uttering six-forged $100 bank nutes of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and Chíua.
Mr. Leo d'Almada e Castro, junior, instructed by Mr. J. M. d'Almada Remedios, appeared for the defence. Mr. H. J、 Arm- strong of Messrs. Witness claimed that he had warn ed the defendant that if there were any question later about the Char tered Bank notes he would look to the defendant to make good.
After the defendant had gone, wit- ness's son, an accountant in the shop, arrived and was banded the notes. He examined them and ex- pressed suspicion. Witness sent his son and a foki to the Lee Fung Hang firm and after some time they returned, bringing the defendant with them. Questioned at the wit- ness' shop, defendant had said that he had got the notes in change and when pressed to tell where he had got the change, had refused to dis- close any name. An altercation ensued and a policeman came on the scene.
