SUMATRA JUNGLË
FILM.
BY MAKERS OF "CHANG."
LIVING IN HUTS IN THE WILDERNESS.
Medan.--Mr. Schoedsack, the maker of that most wonderful of all jungle films, Chang, is now busy in the heart of Sumatra on what promises to be yet another screen masterpiece.
Visitars who have been travelling in Atjeh say that the villagers and jungle dwellers in that part of Sumatra are agog with exeite- ment concerning the doings of some white people who are living in the neighbourhood of Bireuen inna- tive huts and, in the company of an incredible number of monkeys.
The white people are Mr. and Mrs. Schoedsack and a European assistant, Mr. Williamson, and they have already put in much of the spade work which is necessary before a jungle film like. Chang can be begun.
I met Mr. and Mrs. Schoedsack on their arrival at Medan, and I hope to visit them again in their jungle wilderness,-if the Ameri- can Consul succeeds in his inter- mediation on my behalf. That would be, indeed, a privilege for Mr. and Mrs. Schoedsack dislike being interrupted in their work. I LITL eagerly awaiting their
answer.
It Was
Cruelty Rumours Unfounded. Mr. Schoedsack told me that,- since completing Chang-he has made another film which he has enlled Four Feathers. taken partly in Sudan, Africa, and partly in California. This film, like Chang. was made for the Paramount Company. The picture he is now taking is na entirely private enterprise.
As may be recalled, Chang was made by Mr. Schoedsnek' and Mr. Whilst M. C. Cooper in Siam. the picture was being inade they lived for eighteen months in grass huts, just as the Siamese live.
I think, on this occasion, Mr. Sehoedsack will find in his wife' a very able "first lieutenant." She gives the impression of being elever, business-like and alert.
I inquired, prudently, about the dangers of the companionship of wild beasts, but they did not seem frightened at all,
"I do not think they are much- more dangerous than human be ings," Mr. Schoedsack remarked.
[1
"And is not yours a very dreary good life, always waiting for opportunity to, lake your sub- jects I asked: "Do you never lose patience!"
"Oh yes, very often. But if we lose patience we have to find it again," was the characteristic re- ply.
There have been unpleasant rum ours that the hundreds of monkeys used for these films are maltreated,

TAICHOW JUNK PIRATED.
TWO KILLED AND FIVE WOUNDED.
Two members of a junk crew were killed and five were wounded when their vesse) was pirated off the Chwansha Coast, south of the mouth of the Yangtze, by a band of sea-robbers operating in two three-masted vessok camouflaged de, merchantmen,
The pirated junk was the Sun Ki-being, bound for Shanghai from Thichow with a cargo of furniture and wood carvings. The pirate craft approached shortly before sunrise and after following the vessel for several miles; moved in closer and narrowly missed collid- ing with the cargo ship.
Junk Attempts Flight. The junk master, Koo Lung Sen, attached no significance to the fact that the ships had followed him for
several miles. They presented the appearance of ordinary merchant junes, he said in describing the incident later, and hence he saw no reason for worry. But when they started to close în on him, he changed his mind and started to
FLAT.
I launching their attack on the cargo junk, the pirates came within Koo started to turn his ship around a few yards of a collision. Master
to escape and as he did so, the sea- roubers opened fire, killing two of the crew and wounding five.
Vessel Crippled. Approximately 40 pirates board- ed the merchant vessel, seizing the captain. They demanded money and Koo turned over the ship's cash box containing 8700.
The pirates asked for more. There was no more so they held up the crew,
After riding the pockets of the crow, the pirates examined the argo, pronounced it worthless as far as, they were concerned and left the junk. On leaving, they broke the beam to prevent pursuit.
The junk was found drifting help- lessly at sea several hours later by janother junk, the King Heng-ho, The unfortunate vessel was towed to Linho where the wounded were sent to a hospital for treatnjent and the junk was repaired.

They also desire to request that dredges should stop work for two’ days per month, and mines operat-. ed by gravel pump, for one day per month.
