Speeding Up.

All the latest equipment facilitating cable and wireless ser vices will be installed in the new building. Speeds of communication have been constantly increasing in recent year and new types of high-speed cables now coming into operation promise, with the use of the regenerator system, still great- er acceleration in cable services. Under experimental conditions 400 words a minute have been des. patched.

The Beam services, by which 400 words a minute have, under.com- mercial conditions actually been sent, may also be expected to at, tain even greater speeds when the new multiplex apparatus, giving several communication channels on one Beam circuit, is installed.

There will be facilitic for pri vate telephone and telegraph Hines direct from banking houses, stock- brokers offices, and overrae mer- chants' offices, and other hig users of cable and wireless services to the new building; and for those who use these servicen less fre quently a large corpe of messengers will be available to go to any house or office in the London area on the receipt of a telephone call to collect messages that are intended to be sent by cahie or wireless Spacious azcommodation, is being planned also for the public, who find it convenient to and in their tele. grams over the counter. Oversea telephone services will continue for the present to be operated by the General Post Office.

In addition to being a nerve centre of Britich oversens com. munications the new building will be the administrative office of the merger company, and will hound its entire staff of several hundreds of employees, for whose use a restaur- ant and rest rooms arc contem- plated.

Calcutta-The standing Finance Committee of the Legislative As- sembly has sanctioned a grant of $2,000 ns India's contribution to the Appeal issued in England for finan- rial assistance for Sir Ronald Ross, in recognition of his services in the study and treatment of tropical dis- eases. Sir Ronald Ross was former- ly a member of the Indian Medical Service.
