AIR-COOLED CARS.

FRANKLIN PROVES POWERS IN PIKE'S PEAK CLIMB,

Complete mastery of altitude and changing temperatures by tha Franklin air-cooled motor was tho sensation of the annual Pike's Peak

bill-climbing classic in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and of the first long-distance endurance, run ever attempted up and down the tortubus course of this famous

mountain.

switchbacks in the upper ranges.

Again, in an even more remark able demonstration independent of the race, an air-cooled Franklin sedan with Cannon Ball Baker driving, made sia round trips of the treacherous course, a total dis tance of 150.28 mües, in four bouze and 5 minutes, a feat never even attempted before. The average speed was 34.03 miles an hour. Each trip required a climb of 4,050 feet or a total of 29,784 feet for the six upward trips.

Motor experts who witnessed the exhibition declared that the gruel ling grind could not be accomplish ed except with an air-cooled engine, since the test can be compared only with airplane performance..

Every type of weather and road condition was encountered in the apectacular test. The start of the route at Crystal Creek, 0,150 feet above sea level, found a tempera ture of 32 degrees above zero, while the snowclad summit, 14,100 fest above sea level, showed a tempera. turo of only 18 degrocs above zero.

From Glen Cove, the half-way point, climate conditions changed rapidly na Baker piloted his car up- ward into the rarified air, which is always most severe test of the inbuilt stamina of a car. The high- way from Glen Cove was banked with snow, while mud and slash taxed the readability of the car. Within two miles of the summit, as the temperature dropped rapidly, the highway was ice-rutted and perilous, but this failed to slacken ths outstanding performance of the air-cooled eng

At the conclusion of the almost

impossible test, which was timed by Postal Telegraphand Western Union, the air-cooled motor was functioning perfectly and Baker, declared the car could have continued up and down the mountain indefinitely. The test, Baker stated, provided a most notable demonstration of the ability of an air-cooled engine to master condition that are seldom met in the life of a motor-car,

Even worse climatic conditions were conquered in the race classic in which Bake was piloting the Franklin Special with four-wheel events and which proved parti drive, applied specially for these cularly effective ia hill-climbing. At the starting point the temperature was 65 degrees above zero, drepping. to almost freezing at the summit, but even this had little effect on the Franklin aircooled power plant, which roared a song of steady power

the course.

Cannon Bal" Baker attained a speed as high as 85 miles an hour, and thousands of race enthusiasts parked at vantage spots along the course cheered is he negotiated the hairpin turns al terrific speed. "

The presentation of this new line completes the company's 1929 Whippet commercial car pro gramme.

The tragedy of a young man who had been haunted by the death of a man in a motoring accident two years ago, in which he was conera- ed, was the subject of a Cheltenham inquest on Ernest Timothy Owen." aged twenty-one, who was found hanging from a tree on Charlton

Common.

He was a butcher's assistant, and two years ago was involved in a motor-car accident, in which he knocked down and killed an old

тад.

Owen's father stated that his son, when driving over the spot where the accident occurred. would ex- claim, "Ah, this is the spot!" He had been erratic of late and his mind was obviously "affected.

A letter addressed to Owen's par- erts at Berwyn, Leckhampton, was found in his possession. He

wrote:

Marked interest is shown in the mechanical features of the Whippet Six Truck chassis, which includes four-speed forward transmission, piston, timing chain, heavy-seven- Finger-Tip Control," Invar-strut

bearing crankshaft, and full force- feed lubrication, which have been in- corporated in the chassis design to meet the needs of commercial enr operators who demand power, speed, lower cost per toji mile, and general reliability throughout,

Before the introduction of these new units they were subjected to every known test to bring about an entirely advanced performance for the modern commecrial car opera

HE ISIS SIX may well be described as the Supe Monis. The body and chassis are built together in a one-piece creakless unit. Every pedal, lever and switch is so light and so conveniently placed that you have the utmal control at speed. You have the famous Lock- heed hydraulic brakes. You have springing that eliminates all road shocks. And look at the, bodywork itself
