COLOUR SCHEMES AND CURTAINS

I take as an example a room 1 saw a little time ago, which at first sounds a little startling, but which is in fact one of the most restful that. I have entered.

All reads, they say, lead to Rome,

It is a mistake to think that certainly all roads in Hong Kong,

It is rather amazing, it is not that orders for hats are received not only from Shanghai" and "Canton, but also from England, from old friends of the Dolly Varden! The roads are more congested than ever just now for a big shipment of new hats and the most delightful sports

wear

bus been attracting old friends and new. There are also some attractive little evening frocks

of which more anon.

A glance at the Eats confrms several earlier impressions of the. new winter mode. The alliance of felt and velvet is very important. The velvet often appears as ap pliqué stitched on with gold thread, sometimes as a fold over the brows as in one very smart black model with a bow behind the right ear; and sometimes as a part of the hat. In one such case the crown is made uf tan velvet, with a narrow brim of nigger felt having a small brush plume set under it behind the car.

A very smart ensemble in printed foularde in tones of green and beige, trimmed with

zummer ermine.

The Egyptian style with a long close fitting back is fashionable above all others. The trimming of these hats is of the very simplest, sometimes cunsisting merely of the clever draping of the felt. Black is very fashionable, and can be allied with pearl grey or madonna blue velvet en masse, or small appli cations of the same material in a mixture of colours. The alliance of pearl grey and black, and the charm of black stitched with gold, is well demonstrated in a model of grey with a large application of black velvet so stitched. Greens and, of course, all shades of brown are very good. A delightful model which does not come exactly into any of these categories is made of beige brushed angora" wool in trus turban style.

The sports wear, of which I wrote last week, has been selling like the proverbial hot cakes. Newly dr. rived are some delightful pull-overs and sleeveless cardigans of the same wool and style as the tailored sports

wear..."

Among the evening frocks are a couple of models in taffetas, one blue and the other crushed strawberry, both on picture lines. A charming dress is carried out with a pink satin fitted bodice and, a very full long skirt of three tiers of blush rose net. A pouffe of the net at hip and shoulder completes the dainty effect.

Distempered Walls.

,,"

The walls were distempered a pure white from the skirting: to the picture rail, which was rather high; above this a soft butter yellow, as was the ceiling.

The woodwork was painted a bril- liant black, and then varnished, so as to give as brightly a reflect-gloss, and is distinguished for ita ing surface as possible; the floor rough unaven grain, rather like the bark of an oak tree, with little pita was treated in the same way.

these chairs which had loose seats were covered with a patterned yellow and white cretonne, while the curtains were of a black, white, and grey linen with an heraldic design. The lamp shades were of the usual vellum.

The pictures were either oils in gold frames or etchings in black

colour..

You can see examples of bags made in these three new leathers, besides fascinating examples in reptile skin, morocco, and tweeds, in Lane, Crawford's Ladies' Saloon. Some of the bags have ingenious. new fittings, and most of them have a really good sized mirror and" comb. The envelope pochette style A very important principle is still running neck and crop with dred is that of the reflection of the pouch bag shape, and there seems nothing to choose for smart- ness between smalt and large bags.. although I think that exaggerations either way will not be in vogue this winter. One envelope of black antelope has a triangular (or true envelope) fap which fastena down over n front of gold kid. Another has two corded bars of geld kid across the front. Bright green shark skin makes an exceedingly smart pochette of ample size, while many women will give the palm for chic to a large envelope of beige ostrich leather transversed by an obliqur band of black patent. A pouch bag of beige morocco with a novel amber mount has all sorts of ingerious fittings inside, while a smart pochette of madonna blue carries a tiny memo pad and pencil fastened outside.

Now in the ordinary way, of course, blank white walls would be cold and trying to the eyes, but in this case the ceiling by reflection gave a certain warmth to the walls without changing the essential tone. In the same way with the black painted woodwork, A highly re- flecting surface was deliberately chosen so that the black surface, while giving the required dark tone to balance the lightness of the rest of the room, should appear bright and give back the warmth of the ceiling.

Not Curtains,

The colour of the material is not only reflected in the room when the curtain is drawn, but also when it pulled back, so that although the colour may tone beautifully with the rest of the room, it may during the day entirely ruin in colour of the walls For instance, if you have deep purple curtains of lightly blue tone, it is almost certain that the effect of cream walls will be ruined by the fact that the reflection will be thiefly blue, and so turn your walls a rather un pleasant tons of green, "which, of course, is highly undesirable.

Such accidents can often be cor rected by the judicious use of net curtains during the day of such a colour as to give warmth to the rest of the room, if it needs it, at the same time correcting of unfore Been reflection. You will now find
