Mr. Stanley Johnson, of Lon- don, proposing the résolution, said: "In the medical world there is a person known as the qüack doctor. I think we can liken him to the present-day dress reformers. They are dress quacks, and they suggest that shorts and open-neck shirts will do for all occasions. Dr. Al-

"This good man joust be talking with his tongue in his check, other wise he would try' and induce Mr. Gordon Selfridge or Sir Sidney Skinner, of Barker's, to prò. msande up and down their stores, wearing shorts, &c, as an example to their employees. Dr. Jordán should also set an example bimself, and call on his patients in this ridiculous garb instead of in the dignified dress usually worn by
doctors.
Value of Good Clothes.
"Dean Inge. that apostle of humour," said Mr. Johnson, "saysTM trousers might be abolished in fav our of shorts. But this reform- ing dean sticks to gloonly breeches and covers his calves with gaiters, And so virtually declares, "Do as I say and not as I do.' And for a very good reason. It is beyond the imagination to picture the Dean in St. Paul's pulpit making a pro- found impression in bare legs,' (Laughter.)
Mr. Johnson denounced grotes- queness in dress and emphasised the paychological value of being suitably clothed and deprecated

!*PLUS-FOURS” IN CHURCH.
MINISTERS' VIEWS.
Dr. J. C. Bacon, who was induct. ed to the ministry of Jesmond Pres-- byterian Church recently, appears likely to become known in a keen sporting district as the "sports- man's parson. He welcomes Wor shippers who appear in "plus- fours," and has instituted special services for sportsmen.
The Lord Mayor of Newcastle (Conncillor Arthur Lambert), ex-" tending a civic welcome to Dr. Bacon, said that while he might venture to appear in goling garb -at a small country church, he hard- ly dare do so in Jesmond Presby terian Church...
To-day other Newcastle ministers stated that they would not be at all alarmed at seeing a change from conventional dress.
.
The Rev. William Younger, of Central Primitive Methodist Church, said he was against starchy church-going conventions would much prefer people to feel at home
and
comfortable in church," he added plug-
The Rev. Alfred Thomas, vicar of St. - Barnabas,” Jesmond, was more emphatic. I would cheer fully give the right hand of fellow ship to any man who, appeared in plus-fours at the door of my Church"
