With the introduction of high- pressure water-tube boilers for driv. ing the latest type of high-pressure turbine engines," engineers will have to take a more intelligent interess in the treatment of these boilers than they have in the past with the older types, for the reason that salt er brackish water will be out of the question for these bailers.

Should salt or brackish water or vegetable matter inadvertently enter these boilers while working, pre- cipitation, male-forming, pitting, and corrosion will be more rapid on account of the increased tem- perature, so that immediate steps will have to be taken to deal with this foreign matter until ar op- portunity occurs to get rid of it and purer water introduced.

boiler chemicals and seda solutions because of their searching qualities bringing about leaky boilers; zinc because of its limited usefulness and high cost.

In the older types of boilers, with their copper and brass internal pipes and fittings, and the slightest trace of salts in the boiler water, galvanic action undoubtedly, exist- ed, that zinc plates in metallic contact with the boiler plates were uneful. Where boiler-feed water, of low temperature carried large quan- tities of air, the hydrogen liberated · from the oxidising zinc mixed with the oxygen in the air, forming water, and sa neutralized the in- jurious effects of the air present in the feed water.

With the substitution, of these copper and brass internal fittings by steel internal fittings, and pure fresh water, there can be no gal vonic action.

With the greatly increased tem-' perature of present-day boiler-feed water, and the greatly increased' circulation in the new type of high- pressure water-tube boiler, there should be no further use for zine în this type of boiler.

It will be too late after water of an injurious nature gets into these boilers to treat it, hence it will be an absolate necessity to soften and purify the feed-water be- fore it enters.
